I hope a band like The Big Pink continues to make great music and follow up from their debut. It's premature to say they will be a headlining band in five years but I personally hope so

I'ma ball at the mall shuttin' down the sea wall
Yeah Yeah Yeahs
TV on the Radio
Queens of the Stone Age
The Roots

also MMJ headlining Bonnaroo in that time
Stevie Wonder, Jurassic 5!!, Magnetic Man, Pogo, Tycho, Tears for Fears 2013
Coach 06,07,08,09,10,11,12,13(1)
Sasquatch 12
Lolla 11(Chile)
VOODOO 11
Street Scene 07,08,09
Rock the Bells 07
Headliners are not who you think is good or who you'd like to see. Headliners are for the mainstream, "ive never heard of Coachella but I've heard of Kings of Leon" kind of people. So I find it pretty ridiculous that you think that your personal preference of Lupe over Kanye means more headlining potential. Kanye is huge whether you like him or not, and whether you like him or not he is certainly "big" enough to headline and certainly "bigger" than Lupe.
The Avett Brothers are nowhere in the stratosphere of headlining. Nowhere close. Nobody was happy about JJ headlining, but that doesn't pave the way for more shitty headliners.
I wonder if the Silversun Pickups make another hit record they'd be considered big enough. Probably not but I love em and they get played on KROQ a lot.
I could see second line possibly
Upcoming Concerts:
4/16-Crystal Castles @ The Beacham/Orlando, FL
4/19-4/21- COACHELLA
5/3- Matt & Kim @ Northcote Social Club/Northcote, VIC, Australia
6/20- Amanda Palmer and the Grand Theft Orchestra @ The Forum Theatre/Melbourne, VIC, Australia
wsp final 3 shows
i think silversun pickups can headline with two more great albums
Were Sigur Ros given the opportunity to headline a festival, I think they would really bring it.
Bah - Maya was a flop, and she's progressively gotten worse and worse live.
Yeah Yeah Yeahs deserve headliner status.
Ill agree with the yeah yeah yeahs because their sets at coachella have been amazing
I would say YYY's, but it seems their album stalled on them(similar to Interpol in 07). If album 4 brings them back, then we can talk about headliner status. It just seems harder now to regain momentum after a weak album, and they also seem to take too long with new album releases.
Phoenix, with a bullet
"Without music life would be a mistake" ~Nietzsche
day 1: At the Drive-In
day2: The White Stripes, or Led Zeppelin with Jason Bonham (his son) on drums
day 3: The Gaslamp Killer/Kutmah and/or Flying Lotus
could be a while for some of these?
eh. Ill keep my hopes up.
EDIT:
I'm also going to throw Neutral Milk Hotel out there for the fuck of it.

Really? It's Blitz was rated one of 2009's best. Another album with singles like "Heads Will Roll" will give them a good spot at headlining.
And i agree with Phoenix being a headliner if not, a co-headliner like The Strokes are this year. I dont see them flopping with their next album.
2012's worst headliner? Lady Gaga is out with a new album in the next couple months...be ready. Then again, that's not a horrible idea compared to the thought of Lil Wayne or (insert almost any rapper).
Lots of good mentions here, although I think Phoenix is basically there now, they don't need 5. One name that hasn't been mentioned is Cut Copy. I could easily see them rise up the ranks over the next few years.

Hooked since '06
Check my latest music video
in 5 years i think that
MUSE, RADIOHEAD, RHCP, PEARL JAM
could headline.
up-and-comings?
i think
Cage the Elephant (after 2 more solid albums)
Silversun Pickups (after 1 more solid album)
could headline.
i have a twisted fantasy that someday the japandroids get big. gah i wish they'd play coachella
I'd love to see Metric and Robyn play big places in the US.
Robyn has done some big places in Europe and Metric have done at least a dozen Canadian shows int he 5-10,000 range where they had the audience in the palm of their hands.
A Perfect Circle, QOTSA, Interpol, Pearl Jam (has to happen sooner or later), Deftones, Primus (or at least sub-headliner), Cocteau Twins
I know we're mainly talking about bands that are big or in the first half of a potentially long career, but I just want to touch on some in their "elite veteran" status. I want to say Modest Mouse, but I don't think they will ever put out something that gets them enough plays to put them over the hump. Maybe the same thing with the Flaming lips. Wilco?
I believe that The Pixies, not a newer band of course, will headline a day of Coachella in the future.
I don't think I can think come up with a younger band that hasn't been mentioned already. Apparently Animal Collective is close. I had no idea. I've never heard one casual music fan ever say their name. I'm still shocked they're on the second line.

"Mr. Toad's Wild Aidz."
Coachella 2016: Vampire Weekend / Grizzly Bear / LCD Soundsystem
i do belive justice actually could headline with a live set when they drop a new album.
I've seen three or four mentions of Flying Lotus in here. As a headliner. For Coachella. I like the guy's music, but what universe are you people living in that you think that type of music will ever have the kind of mass appeal needed for a headliner.
The Black Keys - you can bet on it.
