You've seen these right? $18 at Wallymart (for just the side wall. You can get screens too.)
ps Or were you trying to hide?

I have this
and don't recommend it. It's cheap and light but flimsy and inefficient.
I have the side walls but I really want the camouflage netting. I want to make a M.A.S.H. camp.

i use a $50 canopy i got from walmart...i then safety pin tapestries all around it and they shade me very well...and then i can roll them up and pin them anytime i dont need shade or privacy...i use two tapestries per side so i can have one down for shade and have one up to talk to my neighbors...i use safety pins and zip ties at the bottom corners and zip tie them to tent stakes in the ground for when the wind picks up (because it will)...pretty simple but works well...they're thicker than using sheets and i don't have to invest any money in shade cloth or side walls...

Decided our group needed a larger shaded communal area, so I borrowed an idea from a guy who built something similar for Burning Man. Here is my test run of building a PVC Shade structure. The dimensions are about 10 feet wide, 13 feet long and about 8 feet tall.
I used 1/2 inch PVC, and 2 foot tall rebar, buried about 9 inches deep.
After connecting the arch pieces together and putting them on the rebar, I connected the arches with tee connectors on the ends, and cross connectors in the middle.
I am 6'3+, so this shows you the height and width of the structure.
Attached Coolaroo 90 percent UV shade cloth from Home Depot online ($20 a roll for 6'x15'), and placed it on one side. I will put another on the other side on the polo grounds.
I attached strategically with zip ties, and made sure it is adjustable on each side for early morning and late afternoon.
Here is the shadow it casts just before sunset.
And here is the sun through the shade cloth.

Very awesome. I wanted to buy a 20' dome tent but I don't have enough car camping spaces. I only have two and I need four.
I might mess around with the pvc pipe too. See what I can come up with.

I'm working on a pvc pipe structure for this year too. The Burning Man peeps have tons of discussions devoted to this.
This site has a canopy design program http://www.creativeshelters.com/
The parts can all be purchase at Home Depot for the most part. I'm collecting large coffee cans and filling them with cement to keep the structure from flying away.
If anyone who is going to post up an EZ up to camp under instead of a tent because it will keep you cooler in the heat in the morning, i'd suggest purchasing one of these Gazebo screens from wall mart. They are mesh to keep air flowing in but keep dirt and dust out. As long as you have a 10x10 canopy it fits right over it and is relatively cheap.

What the difference / pros & cons of 80% mesh shade vs reflective tarp? Also how many sides need which type of material?
Reee hee hee hee heallyyyyy?
I just have a fat girl stand in front of me, the hotter it gets the more her puss stank.
This is my Burning Man shade structure. I was thinking of setting this up. I'm just wondering about safety. I've read about people getting their camps robbed. I'm wondering if a nice shade structure like this would offer a little too much privacy and maybe entice people to come snoop around since nobody would really be able to see them.

Thanks. It's super easy to build and cost me around $100 to buy everything. It's called a Monkeyhut. It offers great shade and stands up to really high hinds without any problems. Its design is basic and can be extended by however long you want it.

Sun screen fabric ftw.

We have used one of these the last two years:

It's great to have something this big for large groups, but it does not hold up that well to the winds in the valley, make sure you have extra ropes and better stakes.
10 x 10 mesh wall shade canopy with optional blanket/ tarp overlay for direct sunblock to keep my tent cool. I'm just worried about the canopy blowing away in a high wind situation. Last year on Sunday I saw someones shade canopy windblown into some portable poo houses. I guess they didn't need it as much by then anyway though lol
I will be making this next Saturday. The lady requested I do so. Man I love it when my woman demands me to make like a kid and build stuff. =)
I have an easy up and will go to the Home Depot and but the felt UV material.
My goal - ultimate comfort is just a matter of how well you are shaded and kept cool. All things considered are second, at best.
out of curiosity guys, does it get very windy? I've been to festivals here in autralia where we will drunkenly set up what we think is a brilliant shady dry camp and return to a scene from the wizard of oz tornado. I'm going to purchase something over there to go with me and the lady friends camper van just wondering if it needs to be mad heavy duty strap down hurricane proof or if i can rely on some string and tent pegs.
