I've watched A Great Day in Harlem at least 5 or 6 times. Really good documentary about early-modern jazz and of the story behind that famous photo (You know, the one with all the divinely talented jazz players standing on the same stoop in Harlem in 1957 or 58 or something). Great interviews with Art Blakey, Dizzy Gillespie, Sonny Rollins, Gerry Mulligan, Milt Hinton and many, many others. I'd recommend this as the starting point for anyone interested in learning a huge amount of jazz history in a short period of time. Avoid Ken Burns' Jazz like the plague, it's awful.

Was reminded due to news of a new Neil Young and Crazy Horse album, but Year of the Horse: Neil Young & Crazy Horse Live is streaming. Filmed by Jim Jarmusch using a low quality camera. It's worth a watch just for the some of the live performances of songs like "Tonight's the Night," "Sedan Delivery," and "Like A Hurricane." Interviews with the band who talk about their formation, death of guitarist Danny Whitten, and shows the band's closeness along with some of their squabbling. Also, Neil's dad makes an appearance with some interviews. But, more so it's for people who are already fans of the band, and probably wouldn't convert any new ones.

Not on Nexflix, but the Rolling Stones documentary Crossfire Hurricane on HBO is pretty damn good.

My brother was into GG Allin for a few years (not sure if he still is), he showed me the Hated doc, and video of GG's appearance on the Jerry Springer show.

I can vouch that Jandek on Corwood is definitely worth seeing.

Offering an engaging look at Austin, Texas, through its thriving music scene, this documentary follows local musicians as they strive to make a living, retain their creative integrity and deal with the changes in the city they love.
Not a fan of the genre, but since this was a friend's piece, I watched it. It was interesting to see the different characters and egos involved in the local scene. It seems a bit scattered at points when you visit all these progressing groups, but in the end, it perked interest in traveling to Austin to explore what has been shared with me.

not sure if it's been mentioned, or if it's available on netflix, but the documentary BEWARE MISTER BAKER is a fucking must see. Amazing documentary about one of the all time greats, Ginger Baker. That guy had quite the life.

I recently watched There Are No Innocent Bystanders which focuses on the Libertines' comeback in 2010. There's a little bit of archival footage and some talk of how they formed, etc. It was OK? Some of it was great, like the lyrics bouncing ball run through of "What a Waster" (about 25 minutes in). It would have been better if the studio sessions were mixed so you could hear the vocals.

In other music doc news Big Star: Nothing Can Hurt Me opens in theaters on July 3 and will also be available via iTunes and various On Demand sources. I don't know if/when it will come to Netflix. That link has an autoplay of the trailer, which is really effective at making me want to see it.

Thanks for the write-ups John, and for the reminder about the Big Star doc I had completely forgot about that.

I think I was looking for the Leonard Cohen doc I'm Your Man that you guys were talking about in here when I stumbled upon Ladies and Gentlemen...Mr. Leonard Cohen, which is on Instant right now but is being taken down on 7/23. I watched it last night and it's really fascinating - shot in '64/'65, it's all about his poetry/writing years and is a must-see for anyone who is constantly bewildered by his incredible lyrics. It's only 45 minutes long too, so it's an easy watch.

Not on Netflix but I found this on Youtube: great Lou Reed doc from American Masters.

An hour and 15 min that goes by fast.

I watched this over the weekend. Really enjoyable, although it made so many of the musicians, both old and new, seem like big douchebags. Which might not be far from the truth, but hey, they made good music. It expires on 8/29 fyi.

Awesome news; I just joined the 21st century and downloaded netflix yesterday, so aside from trying to catch up on breaking bad, this is a definite must see

Haha, that's exactly how I felt about that movie. Arto Lindsay was the only likeable talking head, from what I remember.

If you'd like to buy it, it's going to be coming with the CD/LP reissue of Spiderland that Touch and Go is putting out on June 24. I imagine that will be considered the release date and it'll probably show up on official streaming sites sometime after that. I've seen about 20-30 minutes of footage from it that Lance Bangs screened at his birthday concert a few years ago, and it was spectacular. Great sound, tons of unreleased audio and video and some hilarious and insightful interviews.
