I don't know if it is on netflix, but I watched "Iron Maiden: Flight 666" on VH1 Classic last night, and it was really interesting and entertaining (it should be noted that I really like Maiden, but don't own a single album of theirs).

listening to chuck berry i remembered Chuck Berry Hail! Hail! Rock 'n' Roll, which is a great document of chuck berry's 60th birthday/concert. the backing band to support berry for the concert was put together by keith richards, as seen in the documentary, and is worth watching just to see how berry was the only man richards let give him a hard time, and get away with it. other guests include eric clapton, etc

Watch Rockers, it's on instant now.

It's a 1977 movie set in Jamaica about this roots reggae drummer. It's funny because all the description tells you is that the movie is about the drummer deciding that he wants to sell records. But it turns into this semi-crime drama because the mafia steals his motorcycle. Kinda silly but entertaining.

    The music is choice.

Eels: With Strings: Live at Town Hall

this one is on netflix on demand, and worth a watch even if you're unfamiliar with the band. E, also known as Mark Oliver Everett, is backed by a fantastic backing band, with strings and multi-instrumentalists. the concert takes place in New York, and is intercut with behind the scenes footage.

Strange Powers: Stephin Merritt and the Magnetic Fields covers the band's formation, making of 69 Love Songs, interviews with Stephin Merritt and the band, etc. there's no real insight Stephin Merritt's life past or present, but should be enjoyable for fans of the band nonetheless.

I tried watching that this weekend but there were problems with buffering and loading, so I just said screw it. And the only place you can get the DVD is the movie's official website for $25 plus shipping.

I didn't like Fearless Freaks nearly as much as I anticipated but the section about Steven's heroin addiction was some of the most unbelievably compelling shit I've ever seen. Wow.

Guess I'll have to hit the Mission of Burma one tonight.

Yeah, I would recommend the Mission of Burma doc. Good stuff, and it's only a little over an hour long if I remember right. I think it will taken down off instant after tonight.

Just watched the documentary; thanks for mentioning it! It was interesting but also somewhat annoying as apparently Roger is a dick, Clint a douche and Peter pathetic. It was cool to see the old footage and Bob has a great hat.

The live performances, to me, felt like an afterthought. Were those actors actually at those shows? For that matter how much of the crowd footage that wasn't of the band performing actually recorded at the show it was made to appear to be part of? I saw BRMC back then and never saw anyone crowd surf; London crowds weren't really THAT different, right?

The non-live rock show bits were worse, really. There was nothing to the human drama and even the porn bits were largely devoid of titillation.

So far, Cure for Pain: The Mark Sandman Story has only been shown at movie festivals and (very few) select cities.

Here's the link to the less than informative website:

I got to watch Still Bill tonight about Bill Withers, and would recommend. He famously wrote "Ain't No Sunshine," "Use Me," "Lean on Me," among others. Although, it should be enjoyable for both fans, and people unfamiliar with his work. Withers is insightful about his life, fame, and family life. It runs about an hour and 15 minutes.

Totally agree. Just watched it tonight and my love of Pearl Jam has been renewed. If you were ever even a casual fan of the band I'd definitely recommend it. One of the best rock docks I've ever seen.

Tonight, as part of the Noise Pop Festival, I will be at the SF premiere of Cure for Pain: The Mark Sandman Story. Afterword, there will be a Q&A with the filmmakers Robert G. Bralver, Jeff Broadway and David Ferino. Morphine was a pivotal band for my friends and I in High School. Even though it's going to bum me out about missing them when they were around, I'm really looking forwaerd to seeing this documentary.
