It's kind of gone out of fashion here too, to be fair, but it's still weird to me.

"Straight" can generally be known for meaning "normal," "ordinary," or "inconspicuous," as in the phrase, "Let's keep it straight." I think the use of it in conjunction to homosexuality has more to do with that than it does as the opposite of "bent" (although that certainly would have been the basis as the "irregular" for that meaning). I assume this was an appropriation in the same way that the original meaning of "gay" was something along the lines of "joyous and carefree" and thus was applied to homosexuals in a very superficial way.
I am of course writing this with no research whatsoever.

The suggestion either way is of deviation and defect though, seems like?
Missed this.^ Yeah, I obviously wasn't being very clear there. What I meant was that I didn't understand continuing to pine after a guy after you've found out he's straight. I've met some charmers with whom I thought I was flirting only to find out they were inordinately flirtatious straight dudes. It might be disappointing, but as soon as I found out, I'm instantly turned off.
As for the term "straight", apparently, you can actually blame the gays...
(from Wikipedia, of course)STRAIGHT (Slang):
The term "straight" originated as a mid-20th century gay slang term for heterosexuals, ultimately coming from the phrase "to go straight" (as in "straight and narrow"), or stop engaging in homosexual sex. One of the first uses of the word in this way was in 1941 by author G. W. Henry.[16] Henry's book concerned conversations with homosexual males and used this term in connection with the reference to ex-gays. It currently simply is a colloquial term for "heterosexual" having, like many words, changed in primary meaning over time.
So the Janet Jackson show last night was rly good.
5th row, center. Perfect seat. I could see everyones sweat and makeup (the guy dancers sure do have a lot on).
The only thing that really irked me was there 4 were interludes where she went off stage, and she came back with the same outfit.
I never thought I'd care, but she could have changed her outfits.
And it appeared she sang 3/4th's of the show live, which was neat.
Well, that's disappointing. I don't feel so bad about missing her LA stop. Heard similar things. I'm thinking it's 5 years tops before we see her playing the Indian casino circuit.
What part of my mini review did you walk away with the feeling of disappointment?
The lack of spectacle. Heard the same thing in LA. I know she can't fill stadiums anymore, but low key is not how I'd want a Janet show.
I wouldn't mind seeing her. She played in az @ the dodge which is 5000 max. Still seems like a good amount of peeps.
I don't think she ever played stadiums. Arenas, yes.
Her last tour in 08 was moderately successful. She filled arenas in bigger cities, but yes. She played it safe.
It's not as if she's playing night clubs. She played Radio City Music Hall 3 times this tour, for instance.
Anyhow, I found out that in the earlier part of this tour, she did change outfits between sets, but for whatever reason kept it to one outfit after the first leg.
I would love to see a bigger show, but it was fun to be THAT close.
I'm in New York Thursday-Sunday. Going to Yelle Thursday in Manhattan (Webster Hall) and Friday in Brooklyn (Music Hall of Williamsburg). Probably going to The Cock on Thursday after the show, but i don't know of any gay spots in Williamsburg for Friday. Any suggestions?
Secretary of State Clinton, just over four minutes into her speech at UN yesterday. The topic of her address was not known in advance.
HuffPost has video and full transcript of the speech. It's worth a read. Coupled with Obama's speech in Kansas (the broken bargain) it was quite a day for speeches.Today, I want to talk about the work we have left to do to protect one group of people whose human rights are still denied in too many parts of the world today. In many ways, they are an invisible minority. They are arrested, beaten, terrorized, even executed. Many are treated with contempt and violence by their fellow citizens while authorities empowered to protect them look the other way or, too often, even join in the abuse. They are denied opportunities to work and learn, driven from their homes and countries, and forced to suppress or deny who they are to protect themselves from harm."
I am talking about gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgender people, human beings born free and given bestowed equality and dignity, who have a right to claim that, which is now one of the remaining human rights challenges of our time. I speak about this subject knowing that my own country's record on human rights for gay people is far from perfect. Until 2003, it was still a crime in parts of our country. Many LGBT Americans have endured violence and harassment in their own lives, and for some, including many young people, bullying and exclusion are daily experiences. So we, like all nations, have more work to do to protect human rights at home.

A lot of the songs were medleys. I normally loathe medleys, but it kind of worked in this show.
The band interlude was the band and back up singers doing bits of various Janet songs.

'If' is bomb; personally that setlist needs a little more velvet rope. I remember watching the live from Madison Square Garden broadcast on HBO & being in awe of her.
Hah, someone at the end of the show before the encore screamed VELVET ROOOOPE!!
The band did a little rendition of WHAT ABOUT and ROPE BURN during their interlude, as well as WHAT'S IT GONNA BE, the Busta/Janet song.

The gays are certainly the only people interested in her now.
