    THE OUTRAGE.

I could understand your frustration if this was the UK.
ha denver has like the 2nd biggest dubstep scene in the country right now. its just sad to me that skream and benga are getting billed below that douche. oh well

Quickly: Rank the top 5 dubstep scenes in the country and explain their position in your rankings.

As I learned this year at EDC, there is definite advantage to Skrillex's existence (at least at big festivals). I was at the Neon Garden for Jack Beats and after their set I was picking my way for through the crowd as swarms of Skrillex fans descended on the stage. Skrillex hopped on the mic and asked everyone if they loved "bass music" and the shrieking from his drugged-up minions was deafening. Then it dawned on me: none of these people would be at the Circuit Grounds for Richie Hawtin, and they weren't. Everybody wins.

A guy I know told me that his two favorite sets at EDC were Empire of the Sun and Infected Mushroom because he "likes instruments." That's pretty symptomatic of one of the biggest problems with the EDM scene, which is that the average raver has no fucking idea what's going on behind the decks. Live set, DJ set, iTunes playlist - a good portion of the crowd could care less, just as long as there's a beat and they get their roll on. With rock shows you have something tangible to look at and hear; a musician who can't play their instrument or sing worth a shit gets exposed pretty quickly.

I think that's what irks people the most about Skrillex. It's not that he's insanely popular for making shit music and performing it terribly (which is all true) while dozens of more-talented producers and djs toil in obscurity, it's that the average raver can't tell the difference.

    1. La - it's just huge out there
    2. Sf - lots of good producers out of there
    3. Denver - we bring it, lots of dubstep djs have said that we are the place right now
4 & 5 - idk? Maybe Minneapolis and New York?

All that being said, I just don't care anymore. Dubstep is fragmenting hard right now and I haven't really been following what it is doing. Future garage, house, techno and drum & bass is where my mind is at right now in the electronic realm

LA is an EDM wasteland plain and simple.

I don't know of a big dubstep scene here in MPLS, but then again I don't follow too much EDM. I can say that we have big punk, wook, and hip-hop "scenes" though.

Konkrete Jungle has their thing at First Ave every Wednesday, Bar Fly has been doing a lot of dubstep up in the Loft. Sound In Motion has been bringing a lot of stuff into town as well. It's not huge, but it does have it's place.

What the hell? His music is in widespread commercials now? I just saw/heard this GoPro commercial on TV a couple minutes ago while watching the Giants game. Thought I was hearing things.

    A. It doesnt remotely work like that.

    B. It has no effect whatsoever on the rest of EDM

    C. Really, who gives a shit?

    D. Thinking of EDM as a genre seems as silly as trying to conjure up a genre out of "Wooden Instruments" Its a tool, not necessarily a genre or style
Its not 1992 anymore. Technically Katy Perry's songs are EDM.

    E. Again, who gives a shit? All the "real" EDM parties are going to exist one way or the other. Just dont go to the ones at which Skrillex and his ilk appear.
You get to have all the fun and we aren't allowed to have any, apparently.

My only real problem with Skrillex's emergence over the past 12 months or so (other than the fact that he sucks and makes shitty music) to me is something that took place last week while I was listening to Bassnectar's newest album. Some guy that was at one of my friend's house - never met him before; supposedly his co-worker - said, "Oh, I like this. Reminds me of Skrillex."

I didn't say anything, just stood their in silence and shook my head. Now hopefully, he has opened his eyes to Bassnectar, listens to his catalog and tosses everything he owns / possesses that's Skrillex related or produced in the garbage.

Bassnectar is just as much shitty as Skrillex is, and isn't immune to the crappy fan base either.

I'll stick with Mesmerizing the Ultra (his best work to date) and toss aside anything else he has made after 2009.

I'll grant that his best work was back in his breakbeat days (even before MTU actually), but to compare bassnectar to schrillecks is absurd. His music is miles broader than schrillecks'. His fanbase spans a huge range of folks from old school burner hipster through jr. high schooler, and he earned every one of them for over a decade.

schrillechs dumped his digital diarrhea on us a year or two ago, riding the crest of the mainstream bro-step wave (which he didn't create it), and got marketed big time. His music is almost indistinguishable from the sound of a live pig being run across a table saw.
