Thread: No "Chillwave" bands?

  1. #1

    Default No "Chillwave" bands?

Say what you will about the genre label ( I don't like it either) but the artists that are affiliated with "chillwave" are all amazing, (ie: Memory tapes, Neon Indian, Toro y moi, Washed out, etc.) Where are they?

I was surprised Neon Indian wasn't on the lineup. Washed Out would have been great too.

Chillwave died pretty quickly. That's not to say there aren't several artists I wouldn't have liked to see. Totally missed the witchhouse bandwagon too.

i would have liked to see Small Black, especially as i've missed their last two San Diego shows. as for witchhouse/drag/whatever White Ring is pretty goddamn great and i'd see Salem just for the trainwreck factor. fucking crackheads.

You know what I'd like to see? A moratorium on the word "amazing".

    Prince is "amazing".

    Elton John is "amazing".

    David Byrne is "amazing".

No chillwave band with an album or two under their belt (if that!) can be "amazing". It takes year and years of experience and proven proficiency to be "amazing". Mmkay?

I feel like Phantogram is border-line, or at least semi-similar to the bands mentioned.

How about you just upgrade Prince and the rest to "mind blowing" or (dare I say) "epic", "legendary"...leave "amazing" to the rest of em

I'm glad. Neon Indian was terrible at The Echo in LA a couple years back. Washed Out doesn't have enough material to do a full half hour set.

However, Memory Tapes was amazing live.

In any case, Chillwave is a dying genre.

I wasn't aware it was a dying scene, but that makes me happy. It was an awful, awful trend.

I think these two artists have pushed the "chillwave" sound to the next level. I mean, a part of the whole chillwave thing is the DIY bedroom sound, right? Because that is definitely represented this year on the lineup: Twin Shadow, Delorean, Phantogram, even Here We Go Magic.

THIS; Louis CK had a great bit about using language like this on his Hilarious special:

Also, there are some publications out there (cough, cough, P4K) trying to make the case that Ariel Pink is the godfather of chillwave, which I find a bit silly.
