i thought about it (ill go anywhere for underworld), because i will be flying back from israel to the states over that weekend, but i just cant swing it money-wise. gonna stop off in london instead where i have friends and can crash at their place.
no coachella for me this year. lineup is too weak to fly coast to coast.

i went last year, and had a lot of fun. it's broken down by "day" and "night" (you need tickets for both separately and are in different locations). sonar by day is held on the center of the city. it offers shows, multimedia rooms, showcases, debates, expositions. not many people here and it's a good time to relax and learn.

sonar by night is held in a sort of old warehouse outside the city. it's only shows it goes from ~9pm to beyond 7am. it reminded me of parties in south america. i never saw any of the rooms overcrowded, so you'll have plenty of space to move around. it's a well organized festival.

and by the way, if you aren't sticking to alcohol, be careful with the drugs that you buy there. a lot of fakes. sonar has set up drug-testing booths right by the entrance where you bring your pills to be analyzed and they give you a break down of the actual ingredients.

I was able to go Saturday night last year...fresh off 15 hours of combined travel from LA, no sleep, went with a few people I met on the train, best decision I've ever made. As somebody brought up in the LA dance music scene, it was marvelous to me how the highest energy act (2ManyDJs) didn't go on until something like 4am. GO!!!

Also, is that really Steve Reich on the lineup? That rules.

Wasn't there some organization in the 90's here in the states that would do that at parties? Like dancesafe or something.

    recommended.

I posted some basic info in the thread last year:

sonar has daytime and nighttime music. I think you could probably see stuff 24 hours if you wanted. daytime and nighttime are ticketed separately, and in different parts of town. I don't know much about what goes on during the day, I only attended at night.

sonar by night is awesome. it's held in a warehouse in some industrial looking part of town. they have a free shuttle from a convenient point in town to take you there and back. it's partially indoors, partially outdoors.

music goes on until 6 am or maybe even beyond. mostly EDM. solid, solid lineup. decent crowd, it's not all ravers. I don't recall seeing any candee kids there actually. lots of adults. 3 stages and a bumper car ride. there was decent sized crowds, but also plenty of space to move around & dance and stuff.

beware of buying drugs there. there was lots and lots of bogus pills floating around. they had a drug testing table with many warnings up. lots of mcPP, which I had never heard of until that day.

they advertise themselves as a festival of "music and multimedia art". I didn't see anything that resembled multimedia art there. looking at their photos, it looks like those are either present in sonar by day, or in separate venues entirely. not sure. don't expect much to look at during sonar by night. but don't expect to need it either. the music alone kept me quite happy.

    I have some pictures...

I arrived pretty early one night:

I think Sonar was first brought to my attention by you, Edward. I have looked into it since and the lineups are very much to my liking.

Cara - here is the schedule for 2011.

Yes, and it still exists in some form in the u.s.

Edward, or anyone else that has been to Sonar - do you have any suggestions as far as where to stay or any other tips regarding the festival (I guess anyone who has been to Barcelona could chime in too)? I know that day&night passes for 2012 are on sale but I have also been looking into after parties from last year and see that there are a lot of good ones that coincide with Sonar by Day and Sonar by Night. I came across a review that suggested buying single day tickets for each day/night that you want to attend once the schedule is released so you could still fit in sightseeing or any of the after parties. I'm curious to know how much higher ticket prices will be once the schedule is out, but considering this flight is gonna cost at least a grand, it really doesn't matter too much.

off to post in the travel thread...

Renting an apartment is cheaper than a hotel in Barca if you plan to stay for 5 days or more. If you are happy to slum it, grab a hostel in the centre of town.

    For apartments.

Thank you, Chris! Bookmarked and I will watch these prices. What do you usually pay for an apartment during Primavera? (trying to see if it's better to wait a bit if the prices drop or book one sooner than later)

I only know that I don't recommend the hostel I stayed at.

sonar by night goes until 6 am or so, I think, so I am not sure what the afterparties consist of. I imagine sonar by day, sonar by night, AND after parties must span 24 hours. I only went to sonar by night and still got some great sightseeing in. (and new camera shopping... blegh)

I bought single night tickets off people with extra each night I showed up. I barely discovered the festival a month before I arrived, though, so I don't know how prices would have been different in advance.
