You all would be whining just as much if the lineup was Coldplay, The Killers, Hot Chip, Best Coast, Vampire Weekend, MGMT, Kings Of Leon, Crystal Castles, Ghostland Observatory, Peter Bjorn & John . . .

I would absolutely complain if that was the lineup. 12 acts isn't the Coachella that I've grown to love.

I get the sentiment of what you're saying. It would just depend on who else was playing, really.

I would complain too, but this current line-up isn't just a bunch of bands that I don't want to see.

I'm late to the game, but Yup. That was the best time I'll ever have at Coachella. Going post-BJM to see Antony was spectacular as well, then Yeah Yeah Yeahs and The Horrors into MBV into Throbbing Gristle. That's right up there with ATP for a perfect day of music in my book.

What took that night into legendary was the Cure playing an epic set that you could drift in and out of, capped by their refusal to end the night until they played everything they recorded in the late '70s.

And Late of the Pier (RIP?) playing in clearly the wrong tent but still an amazing set to the 50 or so of us who were there.

    That was a good year.

One of my favorite sets ever.

Still got to watch an hour of MBV too.

EDIT* I hope LOTP reforms in the future. They have great stage presence.

Me too. Yeah that was also the year that The Cure made me reconsider them.
I was not a fan at all until seeing the last hour or so of their set.
Im still not really a "fan" but I enjoy and respect them way more now.

it really was one of those magical coachella moments when the house lights came up and the sound was cut so all you could hear were the amps/monitors on stage.

I decided about 75% of everything I've argued in this thread is total bullshit and this lineup is about on par with past ones. There's still way too many repeats and not as many amazing surprises that appeal to me personally. I do wish I were going.

When I first saw the lineup, I would be lying if I stated I was 100% satisfied and I would be lying if I said I didn't wish certain aspects of the lineup were upgraded or completely replaced (i.e., the big name EDM acts), but I quickly got over it and realized that this is a really good lineup. I wouldn't be surprised if I ran into more conflicts this year than in any other year I have attended.

I agree on repeats but if you look at the last few lineups, there are a ton of repeats on those as well. Perhaps I am being naive, but when you book 130-180 acts for a festival each year for what is now the 6th straight year of booking that many artists, you are eventually going to get to a point where you are getting a ton of repeat acts. I am not disagreeing with you necessarily, but I think it's to the point where you are going to see plenty of repeats each year going forward and we're probably just going to have to get used to it.

I can also see why some of you who aren't in this region of the country (or world) would be reluctant to dump a large portion of money to travel across the country when there are other options available.

Eh. I don't think repeats are really all that inevitable (at least this level of them) considering there's probably more bands operating now than ever before, but that's how things played out so that's what it is. I'm mildly disappointed with almost every fest's lineup this year except probably DEMF (even ATP and Pitchfork, which have been pretty reliable in the past, but at least there's still more to come for each), so I think it's just one of those years. I'd even say Coachella is the best lineup of the bunch so far. It's probably due to oversaturation. It'll be interesting to see how the American festival thing plays out over the next few years. The sheer amount of fests happening each year doesn't seem to be sustainable, I'm not sure where the country is getting the disposable income to prop up so many niche fests.

Interesting, SD. I was thinking about this too. There was a long time where the only music festival seemed to be Lollapalooza and now they are everywhere. Luckily, I believe that Coachella will be the last one standing and that in itself might be the demise of what was once such a wonderful thing.

Agreed. There seems to be several in almost every region of the country. My guess is the big ones (Coachella, Lolla, Bonnaroo, etc.) continue to thrive but then the smaller scaled ones start to fizzle out over time. Not all of the smaller ones (i.e., I can see something like Sasquatch sticking around for a very long time), but I am willing to bet you see some other smaller one and two day festivals disappear at a slow rate over the next decade or so.

At the same time things like FYF Fest are rapidly expanding. I think the festivals-within-cities will do well as long as they're organized well and the promoters can command good line-ups. The othe rfest i'm extremely interested in in Fun Fun Fun Fest. Both of these so far are extremely carefully curated and are extremely affordable to attend, which will keep them going i think.

Last three years have been phenomenal. They've proven themselves, at least to me, to be worthy of purchase-before-lineup, just as Primavera has.,
