I'm not a fan of the lineup, but I'm really stoked about a few surprises that made it. My top three surprises:
Lauryn Hill
The Drums
The Swell Season

2013
04/12: Jamie XX, Four Tet, AESOP Rock, Local Natives, Grinderman, Lou Reed, Blur, Stone Roses
04/13: Trash Talk, Theophilus London, Portugal. the Man, The Postal Service
04/14: Unicorn Kid, DIIV, Smith Westerns, Disclosure, Rodriguez, The Faint, James Blake, Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds
I'm not familiar with them, but I like what I've heard so far. Sounds like good festival music, that's for sure.
Aside from DFA there aren't many bands on the lineup that weren't already heavily speculated. No Leonard Cohen '09, the Specials '10, etc.

Bomba Estéreo was a nice add to the festival.
Latin music at its best.

This may seem a bit silly, but Freelance Whales was my most pleasant surprise. Mainly because they will never play in Australia (can't even buy their record here).
Also, Gypsy and the Cat. Tiny Aussie band that doesn't get much attention here and yet make it onto the Coachella bill. Their music is pretty average, but I was just stoked to see them on there.
Elbow would be my last one. Surprised to see them so low, but so glad they are there. I am excited to see them.

Best surprises:
Hurts (favorite new act from last year, Happiness is an amazing record, and given it's not yet been released in the states I thought this to be a pipe dream)
The Presets (I had a faint hope since I know they're supposed to release new material this year but didn't think it possible)
Leftfield (was hoping for this, but again, didn't think it possible... I fucking loved Leftism when it came out, and Rhythm & Stealth was a great album as well)
Big Audio Dynamite (had no idea they were talking about reforming for shows until earlier today)
The Swell Season (I saw Once in the theater and instantly fell in love with everything about these two. Then, they performed at Virgin Festival in baltimore the other year and it was brilliant. Between Hansard telling a camera guy to get the fuck off stage and then after their set time was done, they just hopped into the crowd and kept playing... just a lot of great personality to go along with some beautiful music)
The Radio Dept.
Nas & Damien Marley/ Tallest man were both the two performances i saw that surprised me the both. Tallest man is awesome live and i cant wait to see N&D
