    seriously.

Something more personal would be really nice - more descriptive.

I was trying to avoid editorializing too much. Give the people all the relevant information, explain why a band is or should be a big deal, and let them decide.

    Either way.

I think everyone has been doing a fantastic job outside of a few posts. The one Phantasm did wasn't even a write-up. It was a waste of space to be honest.

I think that is more the problem. Providing too many youtube or no enough information. I've enjoyed some write-ups that were just factual and some that were pretty much based off of someone's passion for the band (see AC or AF). Do the type of review that you want, but be reasonable about the content, have content.

    Thanks.

Everyone, please add at least ONE descriptive paragraph about the band you're doing. Youtube videos alone are not sufficient.

I went back and edited my Fat Freddy's Drop post with more info. I was worried about writing too much originally, but apparently more is better.

    Delorean

How could you not like a band that purposefully named themselves after Doc Brown's time-traveling luxury vehicle from the Back to the Future series? If you think it's just another tacky, forced 80's nostalgia-oriented choice of aesthetic, take note that the band is actually from Spain, meaning that the choice of name probably has a lot more to do with a genuine appreciation for the Back to the Future series than it has to do with pretentiousness. That being said, this four-piece has been around since the year 2000, transitioning from a full-blown punk band into a group that aims for fucking glorious dance music. Their take on dance rock is leans away from the !!!'s and Ratatat's of the world, and closer toward "french touch" artists such as Alan Braxe, Fred Falke and Aeroplane (at least to me) while incorporating the kind of at-certain-times-ambiguous vocal overtones as Baths, Caribou and the like. The band's third record, Subiza, came out last year and though it received a decent amount of attention upon release, people kind of forgot about it by the year's end. I think it's a wonderful record, and I'd be stoked to see the band perform their songs live.

    Cut Copy

Cut Copy are a synthpop band from Melbourne, Australia. Their sound, often labeled as electropop, draws considerable influence from 80's new wave, synth-pop and post-punk. Cut Copy leads the listener on a bouncing tour of new wave/dance-rock goodness, referencing Joy Division and Madonna along the way.
The band's sophomore album In Ghost Colours is one of my all-time favorites. The album focuses more on craftsmanship than vision--a refinement of existing sounds rather than anything dramatically new and original--but it is a genuine triumph nonetheless.

Sorry for the uninformative Green Velvet post. I added more information, and subtracted some YT videos in light of the "write-ups." Aloha, brah.

FOUR TET. HOT CHIP. SIMIAN MOBILE DISCO. BOOKA SHADE. LEE SCRATCH PERRY. BEACH HOUSE.

Richie Hawtin. James Blake. Loco Dice.

See this is not the right attitude to have. The lineup just came out 4 days ago for fuck's sake. With the large amount of people on this board, if you don't have a complete understanding of an artist/band, leave it for someone who does.

I showed my best friend this thread. He's heading down to the festival for his third time, and he wanted to tell you guys all about 12th Planet.

    12th Planet

Formerly known as a D&B producer under the monicker Infiltrata, John Dadzie aka 12th Planet from Los Angeles is the Dubstep DJ for people who are tired of the "filthy" tracks that dominate the genre. He also co-founded the label, SMOG. 12th Planet's tunes are chilled out and clean, without losing any of the massive beats and heavy bass, and they've been blowing up the scene. Add that to his seemingly limitless energy onstage, and you have a must-see Sahara act. Be sure to catch the rising star raging out with the rest of crowd, and get a glimpse of the future of Dubstep.

Easy there, guy. I'm just trying to make this thread more helpful to everyone reading it. I'm not a Cee-Lo expert, nor am I really an expert on most of the lineup, hence why I haven't contributed so far.

I was just trying to peacefully suggest that if you don't have an in-depth knowledge of the act, just wait for someone else to do it. i.e. don't post a bunch of songs from Illmatic and what not for Nas and Damien Marley. They're not going to be playing that material live.

Look, I included the Outkast song and the Goodie Mobb song because that's his history. Sure, it's unlikely that stuff will be played during his set, but I didn't really intend for these posts to be the end all piece of research that people do. They read it, check out the youtubes, and if its something they might be interested in, then they should probably do some more of their own research on those artists and pick up the relevant albums. I'm not really sure what you expected of me. You guys say that my Cee Lo post contained factual errors, but no one has been able to specifically point out what those factual errors are.

It's whatever though. Can we please just move on? I'm not going to write anymore of these, and after all this bitching, I can understand why Salah was hesitant to write them, too. It just sucks that a few people (myself included) have turned this into a shitty debate, and way too much of this thread has already been wasted with bickering. I'm done.

edit: I was serious about that bet though. $100.

Him and Digweed playing for like 6 hours into the sunset at roo was something I'll never forget. Too bad that's the only time any cool edm thing was ever happened there. Hearing and getting down to that kind of progressive dance music on a farm in the middle of nowhere really is something.

The brainchild of Beni G (Mixologists) and Plus One (Scratch Perverts), a production duo from London, UK whose music infuses wobbly basslines, big breakdowns and edgy accapella’s, which are cut, copied and pasted together to create a new wave of British house music. Citing influences as diverse as Timbaland, Rage Against the Machine, A Guy Called Gerald and Sebastian, Jack Beats have honed a style of music, which fuses House, Hip Hop, Drum & Bass and Dubstep with Electro and Baltimore Club.

I saw Jack Beats at Mighty in SF this past June and while I enjoyed their set, I did think they were a little mainstream/cheesy.

Swedish pop star Robyn first burst onto the mainstream scene in the late 90s; you may remember this jam...

Initially signed to pop powerhouse Jive records, Robyn severed all ties with the label in 2005 when the company resisted the heavier, more electronic-oriented dance pop songs she was producing. Among those songs was "Who's That Girl," co-written and produced by none other than Swedish electro-wunderkinds The Knife.

After leaving Jive, Robyn formed her own label, Konichiwa Records with the intent of having complete creative control over her music. She spent most of the mid 00s releasing music to moderate success in Scandanavia and the UK, but was significantly overshadowed in the US by more "mainstream" pop stars. During this time period, her song "Konichiwa Bitches" became a minor success in the UK.

Recently, however, Robyn's unique brand of fembot dance pop experienced a resurgence in the US, due largely in part to the rampant successes of other creatively experimental artists, such as Lady Gaga. Her most recent album, Body Talk (a double album of sorts, featuring a sampling of tracks from Body Talk Pt. 1 and Pt. 2, both released in 2010) received a surprising "Best New Music" designation from Pitchfork.

While Robyn's voice tends to be more aligned with the sugary, flirty vocals of artists like Madonna and Katy Perry, the instrumentation and production on the Body Talk songs is some of the best in contemporary pop music; driving, thunderous bass lines sit beneath spacey synth lines pulled straight from the Kraftwerk or Brian Eno songbook.

Lyrically, her songs range from cheesy and overly-maudlin to witty, feminazi power-wielding battle cries.

(Oh, but the cheesy stuff can be really entertaining and well-produced.)

That may have been the worst review I've ever seen of anything.
