The Swell Season are Glen Hansard (from The Frames) and Marketa Irglova. They play pretty and soft songs with acoustic guitar, piano, and (possibly) other accompaniment from members of The Frames. I saw them the last time they came to Coachella, and although their music is soft, they didn't play softly. Glen really uses his vocals and sings with charged emotions. He also charges at that acoustic guitar when he plays, breaking strings and everything. Last time, they were joined by the drummer from The National (who had gone on before them). I don't think they were going off a setlist - it seemed like they were just picking out songs. They covered Kraftwerk and "Pure Imagination" from Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory.

So the band actually came out of this movie called Once, which is a really nice movie. They play a lot of songs throughout it. It has a great soundtrack full of songs by the Swell Season that differ or aren't on the first album - so it's worth getting. I would actually recommend checking out the band not by getting the albums, but by renting or buying Once first, but definitely listen to the albums too. I had heard the first album when I was importing a crap load of new music from that Coachella lineup. I was playing just a little of each new album I got, and when I got to their album, I let it run through about three times. I loved it. The movie really goes along with the excitement of watching them perform live.

I actually have not really given the last album a proper listen, but there is a video from NPR with them playing their new songs. It's like 30 minutes long. I haven't watched it, but I'm sure it's swell... season... Anyway, it's just the two of them it seems, and I wouldn't know (but wouldn't expect it) if it's just the two of them performing at Coachella. I'm sure they'll have other musicians with them, so that you get a more full sounds with drums.

This is the Frames, but it's not very different from The Swell Season. Just add Marketa Irglova. In fact, they played this as The Swell Season at Coachella.

This is an awesome write up on an awesome band. Everyone make sure to actually listen to the NPR video or if you don't want to watch all thirty minutes of it skip to about 4:55 and watch Low Rising. That's the song that got me into them. The first few lines of that song get me every. time.

    DJ Hype

Hype! Hype! Gimme the funk. Drum n bass dj and producer DJ Hype is known for his jump-up sets in which he incorporates his turntable skills. Having represented England in the 1989 DMC's, DJ Hype doesn't fail when it comes to mixing ability or scratching during his dj sets. Djing since the late 80's and producing since 1990, Hype started his own label Ganja Records in 1994. In 1997, along with djs Pascal and Zinc, Hype set up True Playaz Music now known as Playaz Recordings.

Hype continues to play to massive crowds year after year as well as being a part of Playaz Night at Fabric in London every month, an event that has been going on for the last 10 years. He has also hosted a weekly show on KISS FM every Wednesday since 1994.

Hype is definitely not one of my favorite dnb dj's. I don't always enjoy his track selection but I do recognize that he is one of the originals and his appearance on the lineup is very much appreciated. He has a huge following and will throw down a good set. I last saw him at Fabric in August rocking the main room - place was going bonkers but then again I was in the dnb capital of the world.

This is a vid to an 8 part mix tape. I was unable to find any live footage displaying his scratching abilities without an annoying loud mc.

A great remix he did of Ready or Not. I use to absolutely LOVE this track.

Another good old tune of his.

Yes of course. I only cover the artists that I did because nobody else did, I'm fairly knowledgeable, and have time to kill. I am obviously most excited for the dnb and some of the pure filth acts since I feel we are really getting some exciting shit this year and it is the music that I listen to the most but if you really care I am a big fan of post-rock, other sub-genres of edm, hip hop, and reggae.

Nice. Well, I'm glad to be learning about the electronic acts. I know almost nothing about EDM in general.

There's a lot of great stuff on the lineup this year as far as EDM goes, that's for sure. I am trying my hardest to break away from all of my excitement and start researching/listening to artists I am less familiar with. This thread helped a lot but I only got up to page 8 or 9. Need to get crackin!

Since this board has done so much grunt work and made it exponentially easier for me to sort through new music, I figured I should contribute something with substance. This is a little out there for me but figured to give it a shot.

    Ellie Goulding

Ellie Goulding is a English folk/songwriter/electropop artist. She's gained considerable fame in the UK in 2010. Her first single was Under The Sheets shown below. This video was early in her fame and seems very vulnerable on stage.

Since then she has gained a lot more confidence as she has toured extensively in Europe and Australia however I don't believe she's been to the States yet. Starry Eyed below is her most popular song. Unfortunately, her voice doesn't project enough in festival settings and requires background vocals for her pop/dance songs.

However, she really does have a great voice and her folk songs would be the reason to catch her set in a tent early in the day.

She does this little blinky hand thing in the video for Starry Eyed that bugs me, but otherwise, she's alright. Nice write up.

In an attempt to finish this thread up I am going to get to the point with the following bands. I liked last year's version of this thread for that reason. Anyway.

    Freelance Whales

From Brooklyn (although the band profile says Queens). Like every other hipster look-we-play-not-often-seen-instruments band. EXCEPT - Their drummer has a watering can as a part of his drum kit, because, you know, that is entirely necessary. They sound like Annuals, which is to say that the music is all cutesy lets-hug-it-out indie pop. It is also rather boring after a while. Fun fact: I elbowed the girl in the band's boob at a show.

Their album is called Weathervanes and came out in '09.

    Eliza Doolittle

Amy Winehouse without the drugs. The only reason to be at this set is there is a high probability that she will be dressed skanky.

Video is from vevo so it might be blocked. Probably better that way, actually.

    Gabba gabba gabba hey.

Yeah I don't know either. From China. Apparently these guys have 4 albums. And after doing more (about 20 seconds worth) research, about as many listeners on last.fm as I have bands in my library. I have a feeling this is sort of a what you see is what you get kind of thing. Here's another video.

    Yeah, no.

    Jimmy Eat World

Hey remember when these guys were good/relevant? Think back. It was 1999. I'm not sure what kind of setlists these guys are playing these days, but if it is anything from their last few records you may want to pass. The problem with this band is that their fanbase's age remains constant, and so they write to that. Jim is now married with kids but is still pumping out the same "oh woe is me" nonsense and their albums suffer because of it. Clarity was an amazing record and easily one of my favorites from the 90s, but again, they have put out 4 records since then so the chances of them playing anything good are slim. Here is a setlist from a show last night.

    Bleed American
    My Best Theory
    Coffee and Cigarettes
    Let It Happen
    Polaris
    Futures
    Big Casino
    Dizzy
    Action Needs An Audience
    Pain
    23
    Evidence
    Hear You Me
    For Me This Is Heaven
    Work
    Blister
    Goodbye Sky Harbor

    Invented
    The Middle
    Sweetness

Yeah that setlist is a trip to bummer town. Bolded are songs from Clarity. Everything else is from the records after it. No thanks.

Oh yeah. They are a power-pop rock band from Arizona, blah blah blah, etc. You've all heard The Middle. You know what they sound like.

    MEN

MEN are JD (the one with the mustache) and Johanna from Le Tigre and members of JD's other band Hirsute. Musically it sounds like where Le Tigre left off with This Island, which is in essence electro-pop and dance rock. I feel like it leaves a little something to be desired without Kathleen Hanna around, though.

Their album came out last week. Might be fun.

New Pants are a must see for me. Their set is going to ridiculous. There is not one thing I do not love about New Pants. Also, they are also working on one of the art instalations this year.

Francis and the Lights is a pop/adult alternative band that released their first album, It'll Be Better, in 2010. Apparently there are some Peter Gabriel comparisons and there is sometimes a progressive element in the songs. I don't know, here they are:
