Grammy award winning Lauryn Hill will be performing at Coachella Friday April 15th, 2010.

Originally a member of the trio The Fugees with Pras and Wyclef Jean, she was the lone female in the group as well as the lone American (Pras and Wyclef both being Haitian). They released 2 albums Blunted on Reality and the album that most Hip Hop critics call a classic The Score.

Some of the hits on that album include the famous Ready or Not

& Fu-Gee-La


After the Score in 1996 they broke up and all went their separate ways and had successful solo careers (sans Pras)

Immediately after the break up she began working on her solo album The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill . Her song Doo-Wop (That Thing) is her only number 1 single on Billboard. Bringing back that old Jazz feel in R&B and still spitting real rhymes remaining a MC.


My favorite song off that album would have to be Ex-Factor because anyone who has been in multiple relationships can relate to what she speaks on. With lyrics like

After winning multiple awards and Grammys and being on every music cover for a year, she kinda just disappeared. I don't think many knew where she went. But she came back in 2001 to perform new material at MTV Unplugged which later became her 2nd album called MTV Unplugged 2.0

While her first album focused on her upbringing, love, society, feminism and what have you the songs she performed on MTV Unplugged were more politically and religiously driven. And since it was unplugged most of the music relies on the lyrical prowess for strength rather than melodies and tunes. This album wasn't as well received but for Lauryn Hill fans she spoke some of the truest words she's ever laid on record before.

I'm unsure if she has any new music she has been working on. I've heard she's been performing songs the crowd doesn't know but I don't know if that means new songs or if her audience just isn't familiar with her 2nd album.

And I know this is strictly about music but I know how it is when people get it in their head a negative image of an artist it's almost impossible to like an artist's music. And I'm sure 70% (generous) of this board is of Caucasian descent and some may have heard a rumor that Lauryn Hill doesn't like white people and I just want to put that rumor to bed. It's just as silly as the Tommy Hillfiger doesn't want black people buying his clothes. People hear untruths believe them and spread them so watch this video if you were ever one who heard the rumor and if you don't like her cause her music that's fine but don't judge folks on things they have never said.

I honestly don't care whether or not she likes white people. I have a negative image in my head about Lauryn Hill because she shows up 4 hours late to her shows and then gives lackluster performances. That's really the biggest reason I can't commit to her set, especially if there are conflicts. We just don't know if she's even going to show up.

It sucks too, because she has some great jams. Like you said, The Score is a fucking classic, and I'd love to see a Fugees reunion some day...assuming Ms. Hill can pull her head out of her own ass.

The Kills

The Kills is composed of Alison Mosshart (VV), an American musician (of Jack White's latest incarnation, The Dead Weather) and Jamie Hince (Hotel), a British musician. The two met when Alison was living in London and Jamie was living in an apartment above her. He heard her music and was determined to start a band with her, even though they were both committed to other projects at the time. They're both into all types of art and fashion, especially photography, and their album art and materials reflects that. They've said before that they take longer putting the album package together than recording the album.

They made their first record together in 2003 called Keep On Your Mean Side. Next came No Wow in '05, Midnight Boom in '08 and now their latest album, Blood Pressures, will be released on April 5th.

The first thing about them is that the chemistry they generate onstage sets small fires throughout the venue. They have this old-fashioned guy and girl duet chemistry and their timing together is perfect.

Time and time again the pair has been asked about their chemistry onstage and where it comes from. Alison says that it's the feeling of being trapped backstage and so nervous and so when they get onstage, they cling to each other for dear life and feed off of one another.

As for the music, it's aesthetically spare but very driving. Even if it's a slow soft song (which doesn't happen too often) there's still a driving bass line and strong vocals. Lyrics are often very clever and a bit cryptic but there's always vivid emotion behind them. Midnight Boom was supposedly inspired by a documentary the pair watched about playground games (hand-clapping and jumproping, mostly) kids played in the '70s. You can really hear this influence in songs like Alphabet Pony and Cheap and Cheerful.

To be honest, it's better to see these two in a small dark club but their set in '09 was still amazing and so much fun. I'd recommend that if you like them, you learn the words to some songs 'cause there are a lot of potential sing-alongs. And get up front so Alison can whip her hair in your face. That's a must.

The simple fact is that these two are authentic, art-involved rock stars in a world where sometimes it feels like that creature is extinct. Go see their set. I'm pretty sure you won't be disappointed.
