    The Tallest Man on Earth

The Tallest Man on Earth AKA Kristian Matsson is a folk/blues singer from Dalarna, Sweden. Mattsson’s main focus is the acoustic guitar, but also plays the banjo and piano. His style of guitar playing alternates between energetic picking and forceful strumming. His lyrics paint a beautiful picture of the countryside, often singing about rivers and the forest. Mattson is more concerned with evoking emotion than with making clear sense. Mattson’s voice is demanding and urgent, as if he's trying to convince you of something he can’t put into words.

In 2010, I saw the Tallest Man on Earth at Sasquatch and at a small club in Tucson. Both performances were fantastic. I recommend starting with The Wild Hunt.

    Best Coast

Formerly a part of the psychedelic drone group Pocahaunted, Bethany Cosentino formed Best Coast with Bobb Bruno in 2008 or 2009 and the duo released a series of decidedly lo-fi singles and EPs featuring the duo's take on surf rock, beach pop and 60's girl group music (Phil Spector comparisons abound). The debut full length for the group, Crazy For You, came out last year, and with it came an onslaught of non-mainstream tabloid fights and generally outlandish online attention whoredom (usually instigated by Bethany). If you can push past that (and the group's obsession with cats) what you will find is a band that's really good at making really simple and really catchy pop music. Enjoy.

    Upcoming Shows:
    * Dillon Francis + Anamanaguchi -- December 28th

Going to Weekend 1 of Coachella 2014

Alfred Darlington is a huge favorite among many of us. He is so humble and kind to his fans and he is such a great time live. His sets incorporate many of his tracks and remixes. He is very fun to watch on the monome. His music can be labeled as bass, experimental, glitch... He throws down live and is a must see if you like to dance. His albums over the years have been released on a number of labels including Alpha Pup, Ninja Tune, Warp, and Brainfeeder. He's played Coachella a couple times over the last few years and it is great that he will be playing in a tent this year. I am quite positive that he will bring an amazing set to the polo field.

edit: he will also be in a spiffy outfit. guaranteed.

    Duran Duran
Though certainly one of the more well-known acts on this year's lineup, they're also maybe one of the most misunderstood. Critics of the band accuse them of following a course of style over substance; of releasing vapid, inconsequential music; of being coke-snorting, puffy shirt-rocking, sport-fucking reprobates; of sucking. And, truth be told, Duran Duran have been guilty of all charges at various times in their long career, as well as understanding that pouting one's lips on the pages of 16 Magazine = Shitloads of cash. But to dismiss them entirely is to cheat one's self of some seriously terrific music from a group that has always been a pretentious art-school post-punk cash-grab project.

The timing is perfect for a Duran Duran appearance at Coachella, as the band's recent recorded work with Mark Ronson taps into the sound of their first two albums, a period which also includes some of their best material on b-sides.

It's likely Duran Duran will hit a few of their career touchstones on the Coachella stage, including "Ordinary World," a song I could certainly live without hearing again. But even the albums they released over the span of their career I didn't actually care for have some really terrific material. Their new album, All You Need is Now )featuring contributions from Ana Matronic of Scissor Sisters, Kelis and Owen Pallett), is pretty dynamic and as someone who's seen them more times than I dare recall, I can tell you they're an awfully good live band.

Whether you're new to Duran Duran or are trying to find a reason to get on board when so much of what you know is objectionable to your ears, give the first two albums and their respective b-sides a listen, as well as the new album, which is out now in its original 9-track version on iTunes and will arrive on vinyl and CD with a host of new bonus songs in late March.

You probably already know "Girls on Film," "Planet Earth" and "Hungry Like the Wolf," so I went with some other tracks...

HA! i literally had just watched this video ten minutes ago, awesome

but i think this one gives a better idea of him live:
My entire universe exploded right in front of me, and all I could do was laugh about it.

HEALTH were the noisest of the Smell bands to make it big. Whereas groups like No Age, Abe Vigoda, Mika Miko and the Mae Shi had strong pop undertones to back up their distortion and lo-fi sensibility, HEALTH took a decidedly different tactic. I'll never forget seeing them in '08 and having most of the audience listen to the set from outside the venue. What's great about HEALTH's live set, and their music in general, is the balance between the brutal force of the noise and the insistent rhythms that they consistently push forward. Their first album was described as a mix of Boredoms and Liars, so picture lots of droning guitar and bass with some of the most forceful drumming around, and their most famous song is a remix done by Crystal Castles. They've toured with Of Montreal and Nine Inch Nails, and they are going to be so fucking awesome.

Death From Above 1979 need little introduction, but I guess we can probably spare the space judging by all the "Ooh, new colors!" threads.

DFA1979 are two of the hipsterist looking dudes you can possibly imagine. They are Sebastien Grainger and Jesse F. Keeler, the latter also of MSTRKRFT. Although they only have one full, proper album under their belt, You're a Woman, I'm A Machine, they are accidentally almost singlehandedly responsible for Bloc Party's entire reputation as a good band. They also have a couple of EPs and a Remix album, all of which are just spiffing. According to legend, the name came about as a product of a dispute with James Murphy. Having both adopted the name "Death From Above" for their own purposes, they reached the compromise that Murphy would use the abbreviation, DFA, and the band would slap Grainger's birthyear on the end.

They split on famously bitter terms many millenia ago in 2006, but their influence in their absence has been considerable. Somebody did the math once, and concluded that if everybody who claims to have been to one of the handful of shows they played during the entirety of their career was actually there, the earth would have spun off it's axis into the cold black voids of space. The chances of them ever reuniting were generally considered to be slimmer than those of a HRH Diana Princess of Wales lapdance roadshow comeback tour. Many thousands of of other bands, particularly in Britain, make a point of namedropping them at every opportunity. That these bands have managed to forge solid careers on but a sliver of their smarts or ferocity stands only to DFA1979's credit.

They sound kind of like a chainsaw having angry sex with another angry sexy chainsaw that's also drumming. Wikipedia calls it "Metal influenced dance punk" and although that kind of works, it doesn't quite hint at the unique balance of sleaze, wit, humour, blistering energy and occasional glimmers of late night sentimentality that did, and does, make them special, awesome and facemelting.

I greatly enjoy playing Air Bass to Romantic Rights when I think nobody's looking, and Blood On Our Hands received very heavy rotation on Irish music television, back when there was such a thing. "You're a Woman..." is very useful for getting shit done extremely quickly, and making elderly customers leave your shop as if somebody is chasing them. Many would be familiar with Romantic Rights in particular from it's use in MTV's Human Giant, an ad for Motorola, and the obligatory nightclub establishing shot of every single British teen drama ever made in living memory.

Finding youtube links for their songs will make your hair turn grey because Warner music is a ridiculous dick about region blocking, and for that reason I apologise if any of these crap out for you.

    The Love Language

The North Carolina-based lo-fi indie rock outfit The Love Language was formed in Raleigh by singer/songwriter/multi-instrumentalist Stuart McLamb . Recorded, written, and produced in a storage space by McLamb alone on an old four-track, Love Language's heady blend of Guided by Voices-infused indie pop and nightmarish, Phil Spector-meets-Animal Collective-style production caught the ear of Merge artists The Rosebuds, who asked McLamb to join them on tour as the opening act. McLamb quickly threw together a band, and the band hit road in support of its eponymous debut, which was released in early 2009.

Their second album, Libraries, was released last year on Merge Records. I recommend checking both albums out. You can hear all the songs from the latest on their site here.

I've seen them a few times, one being their CD release party last summer, which was outstanding. These guys are so full of energy.

    This is just fantastic.

Matt, can I make a suggestion? Beside the band's names, include the post number, so people can refer back to that.

I don't think it hurts to have more than one take. I mean I forgot to mention the irresponsibly frenzied and terrible dancing they inspire.

    Edit: besides, region blocking argh.

    SBTRKT

I first heard of him researching the Bestival lineup. Here is a 30 minute set he did for Bestival containing tracks by Zomby, Headhunter, Joy Orbison, 2562 and more. I would categorize him under future garage. He plays in a pretty rad mask (you know how I feel about rad masks). He hails from the UK and remixes a lot of tracks for other artists such as Modeselektor. I am more familiar with his mixes than his production so here's the first one I found on youtube. If you like it I suggest you check out the mix I posted. If you like that I suggest you check out his FACT podcast.

    Broken Social Scene

Let me start out with a fun fact about Broken Social Scene: 1/3 of Canada's population is a member of Broken Social Scene. Its true!

Broken Social Scene are group that formed in 1999 in Toronto, Canada. Originally a 2 piece band consisting of Kevin Drew and Brendan Canning, by 2001, when they started touring, they realized they needed the help of additional musicians and singers to flesh out the sound live. The first album, Feel Good Lost is mostly ambient and instrumental and does not represent what the band sounds like now. Rather, in contained hints of what the band would achieve.

By 2002, the two piece band had become a six-piece band at its core, and a 15-19 piece band live, depending on who was available to play/tour. In 2002 they released You Forgot It In People. A defining album in indie rock. The album is grand and large, yet at the same time minimal and intimate. It is loud and soft at the same time. It features blazing guitars and fast drums, as well as slow piano ballads. The album is full of emotion, energy, pain, sorrow, happiness and joy. The album is also beautifully orchestrated with a horn section and string section of well. Also, Emily Haines (of Metric) and Leslie Fiest On this album and out tour in support of it.

But I feel like I am more giving a review of You Forgot It In People rather than telling you about how flipping great this band is live, which I should be focusing on. I cannot stress how fantastic this band is live. They are everything that is great about You Forgot It In People and more. The band typically now tours as a 9-12 piece band, but occasionally can reach 15 people. They are also the only band I have ever seen use two basses in one song. They usually tour with a horn section and sometimes a string section too.

I recently saw BSS at the Commodore Ballroom in Vancouver and the band played a marathon 3 hour set. They didn't even take an encore break because they wanted to play as many songs as possible. They are engaging, funny and they are able to recreate their music live so well, a lot of their songs are actually better live than on album. I am not sure if I have done a good job describing the band's sound here, but I cannot stress enough how great they are live. To show you, watch these video clips.

This doesnt have the best sound quality, but you get the point.

This video is from the Vancouver show I saw in October last year. This whole video is worth it for when the horn section comes in at 4:09. Fucking watch it.

Not live... just a fantastic song. Features Emily Haines on vocals.

So yeah. Go see them. You will not be disapointed. If it wasn't for a stellar performance by LCD Soundsystem, they would have been my favorite set at Sasquatch and this set is sure to be a Coachella highlight.

Holy shit that HEALTH live video is fucking intense. I just downloaded their albums. Can't wait to listen to them. Do they have a new one coming out this?

Also, with HEALTH, Lightning Bolt and Death From Above 1979... Sunday is going to be loud as fuuuuuuuuuuuuck.

The only song I had ever heard from them was Crimewave, and that is because Crystal Castles led me to them. But yeah, this stuff is great.

Also, I wonder if there will be some sort of live Crystal Castles/HEALTH collaberation at one or the others set. I know one band is Friday and the other Sunday, but I wouldn't doubt it.

    Take

Sweatson Klank aka Take released a fantastic album in 2010 entitled Only Mountain. This album was in my top for the year - excellent bass music with influences from IDM, dubstep, hip hop, and rnb. He is signed on Alpha Pup records and is quite a big name amont the LA beat community. His live show is a fucking party - dropping tracks of his own as well as other producers in the genre such as Flying Lotus - but he absolutely destroys the tracks by deconstructing them and putting a new twist on them live.

Describing his music as "rooted in hip hop but on a spaceship headed for a new and better place somewhere out there," Take may not know exactly where his beats will end up- but he is taking us along for the ride.

    8/23-8/24: FYF Fest
