I agree with this statement. I planned on liking only the Grizzly Bear track, and found myself sucked into the whole album. It's great, much better than his older stuff or Postal Service or any of his other things.

i'd say it's based on the sounds used. The sequencing is never really corny.

Drum programming/beat programming, I'm referring to the beat section. Sound design and rhythm are the fallouts in several of the pieces. For example, take the Grizzly Bear track. We have a mix of beats, and highly compressed drum samples. The compression is a little too tight and the beats used are very conventional.

The beat itself is kind of silly, all the referenced down strokes are incredibly predictable and the second stage of the evolution of the rhythm section is cliched.

I do think the song makes up for some of these caveats with the evolution into full drums, it was pretty slick. I'm just giving an example. That said, there are some awesome things about the song. The rest of the production is top notch. I feel this way of about 2/3rds of the album, and the rest is great.

you know, it did me for a while as well. same with film. It's one of those things that I've had teachers that have taught me so much about listening to music and watching films, that I have a period where I can't stand to do either, because I get so frustrated with seeing problems.

Now though, I'm critical, but I still enjoy it as well.

a critical understanding the artist's tools and methods should almost never be a bad thing. programming beats is easy to do, but really hard to do well. If you gain a critical understanding and then reject what doesn't sound skillful you realize you didn't really like it in the first place. Nothing's lost. The increased enjoyment of the good far outweighs the over-critical abuse of the bad. Who wants to listen to bad music?

(and btw cheezy sounding drum programming is often a stylistic choice. Especially with a producer who's proven himself good at it in the past. Every producer experiments with minimalism. The good ones get over it. I haven't heard this new dntel yet so I couldn't offer an opinion on what he's up to).
