Default When Bad Artists Make Good Songs

So I keep reading that we're living in the age of the song (or the mp3?). More people are downloading individual tracks than albums and increasingly it seems to me that "albums" are becoming loose collections of songs rather than cohesive works. We can argue about whether this is a good thing or a bad thing all day, but I think that this method of exploring music allows us to discover hidden gems. I heard the song "Little Sister" by The Redwalls yesterday and haven't been able to get it out of my head so I decided to look up the rest of their stuff. And, well, it turns out they're not very good. Calling them unoriginal feels like an understatement. Their obvious aping of The Beatles, The Stones, Neil Young, Bob Dylan and several other artists who were prominent in the 60s and early 70s is dull dull dull. And, yet, in the middle of all that they crafted this undeniably lovely song. Everything feels right to me in this. It's obviously a studied lesson in how to copy that 60s classic rock songwriter sound, but it also has what their other songs lack: emotional depth, a wonderfully ragged vocal, a beautiful refrain that repeats in your head over and over and a perfectly (too perfect?) delicate arrangement.

So, give us an example of an artist you would totally dismiss if it weren't for that one song that somehow wormed its way into your ear and won't get out. And, I fully recognize that "bad" and "good" are fully subjective; one man's Brandon Flowers is another man's Lennon, but let's give this a shot anyway...

"Crazy In Love." "Tusk." Although I feel like I should give Fleetwood Mac a more thorough re-evaluation.

Aw, I'll admit to not even attempting to listening to more, by Rumours from front to back is a fucking magnificent album.

EDIT: Also, i only made it halfway through that "little sister" song before turning it off.

It's not that they're a bad band. They're just a very uninspired band. Hey Now Now is pretty much a perfect little ditty. The guy wrote it during a period where his doctor misdiagnosed him as HIV+ instead of perfectly healthy. The songs that came later on their album were rushed and awful. They've slowly been releasing songs and EPs since then, but outside of dramatically changing their sound, nothing too interesting has come from them other than Hey Now Now.

I feel more bad for the Cloud Room guy than anything. He wrote that great song and then everyone expected he'd just write more great songs after that. It hasn't happened yet.

Gotta respect Rihanna. I'd thought she'd disappear after her first string of hits but she stays making catchy-ass tunes. I like "What's My Name" actually

Waka Flocka Flame's "No Hands" is my choice though

I don't understand how an artist can be bad if all of their songs are good.

Starland Vocal Band was pretty awful, but this ditty is a 70's treasure:

I absolutely can't tolerate any other song of hers I've heard, but "Crazy In Love" is incredible. I think it's the horns.
