Default Is there a television buying guide thread?

Search didn't help me. Looking to spend around $500, at least 37"...but from there am clueless when it comes to brands/led/lcd/plasma, etc.

Moving to a new place in about a month. If costco has anything of interest that is decent quality it would be a bonus since i love their return policy and extended warranty. great deal that if you sign up for directv through them you get a $180 gift card to the store, too...which i can apply to said new tv.

    help?

It will cost you a little more but if you can, get an LED. The picture quality is ridiculous.

I have a 50" LG plasma that is a few years old and still works fine. Never had a single problem with it. 1080i and the pic is good enough for me.

I use a 15 inch CRT with a broken VCR embedded in the bottom. Sometimes you just have to kick back and let things make fun of themselves.

So, I currently have a 61" rear projection tv. It's outta here. I'm gonna by a flat screen. I'd like to take advantage of Black Friday deals if possible. I don't know the difference between different brands and LCD/LED, etc. I watch a lot of DVDs but I do not play video games if that makes a difference.

    Please, help me.

We just recently got a plasma tv. While shopping, we were informed that plasma TV's have pretty much fixed the issues they've had; heat and burn-in. LCD is still pretty interesting to me, but we diced to go plasma because of the available features. less heat and price. We looked at LCD but found the colors to be a little too rich. Sure it looks pretty and all, but I didn't like it when looking at people or wildlife. On that note, the lady who was telling us about the TV's went in to a whisper when she said "African Americans look purple." on LED tv's. I wanted to laugh hard as fuck but I could tell she was already uncomfortable.

    My opinion in short:
Plasma has been revamped and has good deals.
LED can be too color saturated
LCD is still pretty cool but can run hot.

    Totally enjoying our plasma TV.

A lot of plasma TV's (and others) also have a "Game" mode to help eliminate burn in.

I wanna buy a tv. I want to spend under $2,000. I cannot use a plasma because there are a bunch of windows by where the tv would go. Advise me

    LG 3D TV under $1000 42"-56"
Fucking great TV, I'm loving it, the picture quality is great and the options of the display and the plugins are great. I've been ranting about the usb capabilities a few times, its super awesome, especially if you find yourself a constant torrent user.

You may want to go one further step and find one with wifi so you can connect it to your computer and stream your music through your entertainment center w/o having to hard wire it to your receiver.

I'd say wait until the new year, there will be a shit ton of sales

How about LCD vs LED? I've got Tivo premiere, so I don't know that I really need "SmartTV" functions, I can already stream Netflix, etc through it.

    Great article sonofhal

I was confused by malcolms question as my tv is LCD LED, apparently it cost $4 a year for the electricity for it.

    I got this package

    Fucking love it.

Thanks, guys. I really struggle with this. When I go look at tvs, I just don't have an eye for telling the difference between the pictures.

And I don't have any interest in a 3D tv but, to be fair, that's only because I'm not a total dipshit.

i have a 42" LCD vizio with 280hz that i adore.. i think it was around $800 from costco in 2010 pretty much everyone that comes over is in awe of my tv. i've seen a newer model vizio 46" LED 3D tv that is also nice, but i don't much notice the difference from LCD to LED and the 3D wasn't that great. theirs was 480hz though, and the motion is insane. don't skimp out on the hz. even older movies look great on both our TVs. the only thing that sucks with the vizios are their remotes. i have two and have had minor problems with the remotes.

But if you run your tv through a good receiver, you don't even need to touch your remote after running your initial (perhaps sometimes additional) brightness/contrast/etc set ups.

I have a 32" Vizio that I bought 4 years ago that i absolutely love. I'd like to upgrade...the cost is so much better now. FYI Vizios are actually made for Costco by LG.

this is true. i have a smaller one in the bedroom and the channel up/down button doesn't work, but i don't even have a cable box in there. i just use it for dvds & netflix. the other one i use only to change inputs, but it doesn't always work. it may be because i use rechargeable batteries though, cause it seems fine after a battery change.

Dont get swayed into believing LED is better than LCD.
Both still trail plasma when it comes to picture quality.

^I'll second the 50" plasma Panasonic Viera. I've had it for about 3 years. 1080p, great quality, great price.
