Thread: It's Raining the Internet or Something

I'm surprised the ISP's went along with this. It certainly opens up alot of doors regarding "network usage". But, I guess since Comcast is trying to get into the content creation/delivery game it makes sense.

    MJA,

This new ruling by the FCC starts taking us down the road where your ISP might become responsible for monitoring your traffic. But, what is most likely going to happen is new pricing schemes from your ISP. Instead of an all-you-can-eat monthly plan you will start to see tiered pricing and then for people who go over their monthly quota will get big fees. Just like going over your minutes on your cellphone.

Its not good for the consumer because of fees. And its not good for America. ISP's are already a monopoly and now there is little incentive to innovate or expand current broadband capacity. Our high speed internet infrastructure is already low on the world list and this current incentive for the companies who own those networks to be satisfied with current capacity and simply tailor customers usage to the networks current performance does us all a great disservice.

In the long run, though, it could get worse, with certain internet sites getting priority traffic over others. Could you imagine if xtube took 10 minutes to load just one video?

I'm sure AT&T and Comcast and every other ISP has been dying for this....they are gonna love to start charging data rate plans for standard internet connections (like they do with cellphones)....you'll get like a 1gb a month plan for $19.95 or whatever a month, and then every MB you use after that you're gonna get raped in fees....Hollywood and shit is gonna love this because they're gonna hope it's gonna slow down the amount of traffic that is downloading and pirating movies/music/tv. It's all bullshit, and is the worse thing to happen to the internet ever.

It's already out and was pretty much the first internet. But it's fairly slow and you need a phone line for every user. It's much more involved, but I don't know enough about it to try to sound like I do.

Seriously Erik. this new reg doesn't give ISPs any new rights. It doesn't restrict them as much as many people would like, and the merits of that argument have been well presented elsewhere. But all it means is business as usual.. and yet we have hundreds of internet chicken littles screaming about how the world is going to come to an end. The hysteria just comes across as the naive whinings of entitled white kids who still haven't gotten past their righteous indignation phase of life.

So, is the worrisome thing about all of this is that the load times will vary among those with different access plans? Will the most basic plan at least be as fast as the internet is today?

I think the fear is that the most basic plans will be as slow as dial up. That's not the reality though.

Yeah, I don't see how anybody could have a basic internet level with access that is slower than today. If one company did that, everybody would flock over to a company that isn't doing that. The same for a company that started to limit their accounts with a data plan - people would flock over to a company that isn't doing that. Unless I'm missing out on something, couldn't this just potentially mean that rich people can have a super fast internet if they wanted?

Paying more for higher speeds is already the status quo. This ‘law’ / ‘rule’ / ‘regulation’ isn’t about this.

It was about preventing ISPs from selectively limiting content.

Hmm... So could my internet provider choose to make torrent sites load very slow or block them altogether?

i was under the impression that this had to do with having the ability to charge more for the amount of data used.

When I read about this a couple of years ago, I thought it was something like Google or Yahoo, for example, could pay a certain ISP to make their page load faster and their competitor to load slower. That could be completely off base though.

But isn't that true now? No regs in place preventing that. I dunno, I'm starting to think the whole Net Neutrality thing is a solution in search of a problem.

I think if we want the facts we need to go to Fox news!

    http://nation.foxnews.com/media/2010...-obamacare-web

When bureaucrats talk about increas ing our "access" to x, y or z, what they're really talking about is in creasing exponentially their control over our lives. As with the government health care takeover, so with the newly approved government plan to "increase" Internet "access." Call it Webcare.

By a vote of 3-2, the Federal Communications Commission on Tuesday adopted a controversial scheme to ensure "net neutrality" by turning unaccountable Democratic appointees into meddling online traffic cops. The panel will devise convoluted rules governing Internet service providers, bandwidth use, content, prices and even disclosure details on Internet speeds. The "neutrality" is brazenly undermined by preferential treatment toward wireless broadband networks.
See, it's more socialism. It's WEBCARE!

jesus, the article is one thing. the comments are even scarier.

This is a prime example of how Obummer can by pass congress to further his agenda. It's all about Control, Control, and More Control. I have 3 words to say about that, Investigate - Impeach - Imprison.
This will end up being the same control over the internet that they have in China, Iran and other places. Eventually the state will control the flow of information, this is in fact what they're trying for isn't it? Control their information, stop their ability to communicate, control their spending, control their healthcare, their money, and everything else you can. Look around the world, and look through history, does any of this sound familiar? We needed this just like we needed Obamacare!
