In my mind, the scariest prospect is packaged service plans that give you access to particular websites (the multimedia package, the social networking package etc.)... a la cable tv packages.

But then couldn't one internet provider win all the customers by saying, "We're just going to do it old school, like you're used to."

The problem is (for non-mobile definitely, which really isn't a problem given this new rule) there is only a handful of national service providers that have substantial coverage (because of the monopolized nature of cable systems). Those few providers just have to unofficially agree to stick to a system like this.

The real barrier to this is consumers (and the FCC) putting up with it at the outset. We'll see, I think they can get away with it in the mobile sector because we are so used to being abused by them anyways, and it sucks.

Franken's tennis channel example wasnt that compelling but it is somewhat less threatening to me since I already can't get all my favorite channels in the basic pkg. I'm more worried about ISPs blocking media deals affecting boh internet and tv. But yeah the fcc needs to extend the non-exclusivity thing to cable as well so that they can't offer their own brand of specialty channel at a lower price than competitors. It's a tough call though.

They handed out the last blocks, but it will be months before individual ISPs run out of addresses.

It's (almost) officially raining net neutrality. http://nyti.ms/1gRVxFn

This whole Barack Obama thing was a nice experiment but I'm very ready for it to end. I hope Hillary takes a pass on the race and Warren runs. It'd be a way to stem the tide of the corporate takeover of everything.

Keep in mind that Obama promised he'd stop this shit during his 2007/8 tussle with Hillary. Then he appointed the cable/telecom industry's #1 lobbyist to chair the FCC last year. #asshole

It's nice to dream, but the cynic in me says Hillary '16 is probably a reality.

Warren-land is, unfortunately, not nearly as populated as it should be. And not nearly populated enough to make 2016 a reality.

    9/12: Shifted @ Mercer
    9/24 - 28: Decibel Festival
    10/3-5: Hardly Strictly Bluegrass Festival
    10/4: Ought @ BoH
10/5: The War on Drugs, Cass McCombs @ The Fillmore
    10/18-19: Treasure Island Music Festival

God, we here in Warren-land don't even want her. Her pockets are lined with corporate money anyway so she's just another hypocrite like the rest of them. Have we learned nothing from Barack and putting in people who are all talk and no experience in the doing? Let's not go down that road again.

The federal legislature in Mexico will put to in the floor a similar bill that will grant very excessive control or communications to the government. Besides destroying net neutrality, the bill also allows the government to "limit" or "suspend" internet communication in cases or "emergency" or because of "public safety" concern and has a very ambiguous language on what this means. Essentially, that would mean that a protest could be a "public safety" concern and the government could have the capacity to shut the internet down and impede communication and dissemination of information.

This shit's not a coincidence, fucking governments everywhere are working for corporations to set up shit like this around the world.

in my research for my MIS program, i saw that today is "Internet Slowdown Day". some sites may voluntarily make loading times longer to give users an experience of life without net neutrality. anyone noticing this?

This seems like just a silly article. At the bottom it states:

None of the websites participating in the Internet Slowdown initiative is actually working any more slowly than usual. But until more cities welcome high-speed competition from the likes of Google, Internet Slowdown Day might be a glimpse into the future.
In other words, "it's internet slowdown day, but nobody's participating, but there's an effort to do so". That was my 20 second take.

i agree, which is why i posed the question. i saw it come up as headlines in other news searches and it's still early, so i was just curious if anyone had seen anything.
