    Default The Best Side

I've been listening to tons of records recently as I've been studying. As I just put on disc 2 of Hot Rocks by the Stones, I can't help but think that Side 3 of that album might be the best side of music that I've heard:

    Jumpin' Jack Flash
    Street Fightin' Man
    Sympathy For the Devil
    Honky Tonk Woman
    Gimme Shelter

What's the best side of an album that you know?

Well, Hot Rocks isn't really an "album," it's a hits comp. Not trying to nitpick, just seems like a totally different question being asked here.

    Ummm...

I mean, I can argue with you about the fact that the word album originally came from the fact that jazz 78s were packaged together into albums after they'd been released individually, or that most early releases were these sorts of albums, IE compilations of singles.

My bigger point being that I think in addition to having five fantastic tracks, that side is sequenced perfectly to show you multiple sides of the Rolling Stones, all at absolute highest intensity, craft, ingenuity and swagger. The only flaw with that side of music is that it's five songs and not more.

That's cool. I guess when I hear "best album" or "best album side," I start thinking about original sequences. When the door gets opened to best-ofs, the question becomes less interesting to me.

Anyway, sorry for derailing the thread. Without thinking too hard I might go with Side 1 of VU & Nico

    Sunday Morning
    Waiting for the Man
    Femme Fetale
    Venus in Furs
    Run Run Run
    All Tomorrow's Parties

    Side 2 ain't bad either.

Side 2 of Abbey Road is the classic answer and still a pretty damned good one.

Anything released after 1988 or so, I have no idea where side 1 ends and side 2 begins.

If I was going Stones, side 1 of Exile is a total riot:

Rocks Off > Rip This Joint > Shake Your Hips > Casino Boogie > Tumbling Dice
    *based upon tedious fact checking.

Side A of Third Eye Blind's eponyomous debut. Next question.

I'm blaming it on Providence, because otherwise side 3 of Daydream Nation would be my favorite

YES to Television, but I prefer Side 2 on Paranoid.
