I needed the sleep. I barely woke up that morning and did the Old Miami thing half in the bag Weekend At Bernie's style.

Good weekend overall. I'll most likely return next year.

Detroit.... Oh Detroit, what is there to say that could capture the greatness that is your little dumpster of a town? You get a bad rap, but the beauty that comes from your music and your people was on full display this weekend. Great start to the (hopefully coming soon) summer. Good running into some of you.

Please post links to any sets if you find them. Thanks!

Just got back from Detroit a few hours ago, had a fucking blast at DEMF. It is without a doubt the best electronic music festival in the US, bar none.

I missed that, but dancing in the rain on top of the pyramid on Monday was a god damned BLAST. She stuck around for Cajmere's set after and was obviously having a great time dancing, too. Missed seeing you there this year. I'm happy there's a bunch of those Sunday Made In Detroit sets recorded because I missed Kendig & the Midnite Jackers. DJ Minx's set was another smile-on-my-face-I-feel-soul-all-through-my-body-fuck-yeah-Detroit moment.

DEMF remains incomparable to any other festival I've been to.

Allien was undoubtedly the party set of the weekend. Completely didn't expect that and so glad I saw some of it. Monday was probably my favorite day overall, musicwise. It's so easy to not pace yourself and miss it, and doubly so with the weather on Monday this year, but it's always a mistake. I've seen the best sets of my entire life on Memorial Day in Detroit.

This is the difference between DEMF and every other festival in the US. Other fests would have him at like 3pm to a crowd of like 50, while they put him as a subheadliner and he threw down the best big room DJ set I've seen in my life. He could totally handle a headlining Sahara spot, but it'd never fucking happen.

I'm starting to have teeny regrets about not going into the fest on Monday, but I'm really happy with what I saw over the weekend. I've been sitting here for an hour trying to make a top 3 or top 5 list for the weekend, and it's incredibly tough since most of what I saw was so, so good... to steal the words of a friend, after Sunday night with Planetary Assault Systems into Squarepusher, I feel like I have been reprogrammed....

Yeah. Pretty much. It's funny, because mid-day Saturday I was starting to think maybe this was a really mild DEMF and maybe I was getting over this shit because while I enjoyed everything I heard and was having a great time, I just wasn't being blown away. Now of course it's in the running for best weekend of my life.

#5 Rrose - Both his DJ set at the preparty and his live set at the festival were fantastic. I like his level of restraint, it really keeps the set building.

#4 Azari + III - I thought they were gonna lay an egg in the rain on monday but they brought it hard with great funky dance music and live vocals.

#3 Terrance Parker - I walked away from Richie to show my girlfriend a little bit of TP and we couldn't leave. He is the best technical DJ i have ever seen.

#2 Luke Slater - I didn't know who he was before everyone hyped him up, and thank you. What a mindfuck. It was artistic, complicated and utterly intense. Loved the changes they made to the underground stage this year. No joke, this set gave my girlfriend her period.

#1 Maetrik - Dude played such a fantastic headliner techno set in a monsoon. I like Maetrik WAY more than Maceo Plex. He played a 10 minute version of my favorite techno song of the year that I still haven't been able to ID. If I could pick one moment of glory I guess it would be that.

It is really hard to make a list because everything was so good. All of the oldschool heavyweights from Moodyman to Cajmere were fantastic. Brodinski and Gesstafelstein were great, a little cheesy, but fun none the less. They also were NOT playing pre-recorded sets. I'm glad the reviews of Squarepusher are so positive. I am a big fan but I decided to skip him because I'm going to catch him at Bisco in July.

One of the few letdowns for me was George Fitzgerald, who really isn't a very good DJ. I also watched Moby jump around on stage for an entire build and drop and promptly walked away. I had no expectations for Moby, I knew he was going to play a cheeseball prerecorded set, even in Detroit. The only other letdown was that I didn't meet Nick O, or see MJA all weekend.

Shit Brian, I feel like I barely saw you all weekend. Will you PLEASE come back to the Trouble Tree next year?!?!? I was planning on skipping next year to travel through Europe, but I've already decided I'm going to figure out a way to both things happen.

I didn't really know who any artists were by name. I kinda just kept meeting up with people randomly at different stages, so next year I'll invest more time into who I want to see beforehand. Richie Hawtin was my favorite, first time seeing him. Masters at Work killed it, we left to catch the last 15 of Squarepusher which was visually cool but there was no way I could dance to that racket. Beatport and Made in Detroit were my favroite stages. DJ Minx and singers, Cjmere and Matardor were favorites as well.

I made it to two before/after parties. Sat night at Soulfood Steve's was a 30$ bust but Old Miami the next morning made up for it.

I'm going to shoot for the D Tree next year. Corktown Inn was fun to trash for 3 days but after staying in Motor City Casino/Hotel the last night I figured the extra few bucks to stay in a nicer room is worth it.

It was nice to meet and remeet everyone that I got to see this year. I hope everyone is feeling normal again

It's funny reading these lists -- and Patrick's Facebook posts -- because I have no idea what 90% of this stuff is.

I feel like a slightly more self-aware version of the "Who the fuck are the Stone Roses?" people.

During his set, I thought of the perfect Planetary Assault Systems slogan: Music to fuck your prison bitch by.

Doubletree is a nice compromise, I think, it's nice "enough" but isn't that expensive and the suites make it easier to tolerate your friends when some want to party and some want to sleep. Sorry to hear that Dissolute was such a bust on Sunday night. It was exactly what I needed on Sunday morning, and well worth the $15 I spent on a pre-sale to be able to come back through the day. Such good food (I am still thinking about those greens) and cheap drinks, and I liked the space. Unfortunately it seemed like it was empty all day so I wonder if they'll bother doing an event next year.

Going into this year, I was thinking this would be my last Movement for a while, as I want to try different festivals next year. Of course, I ended up having a lot of fun and being blown away by some of the sets I saw, so it's going to be hard to pass on it next time... tentatively thinking of doing both Movement and Mutek.

On Friday, I'd planned to stop by the Carl Craig show for a couple of hours, but by the time I got going, it was a little late and figured it could be at capacity, so I just went straight to Perc Trax. Glad I did, as the opening acts (John Templeton especially) were solid. Rrose at the Works was the standout of the night for me. Was a little disappointed with Mike Parker's set, but perhaps just because I'd built it up so much in my mind before the festival. I ended up leaving before Perc went on in order to get some sleep, and then stayed up all night anyway. That's how things go in Detroit, isn't it?

Saturday's best set was Matador... I have to hand it to my friend Danny for talking me into that one. I'd planned to see Nicole Moudaber but was only mildly interested in her. Matador absolutely killed it... I'm going to have to find a way to see him again soon. Sunday AM's Dissolute party failed to be a suitable replacement for Shit show, but I had fun, had fantastic breakfast & lunch there, and stopped in through the day to see a few sets. It was a little surreal dancing by myself in an empty room to these really good sets... Secrets was my favorite after/day party set of the day, so good that I wish I hadn't left to go see Magda at that time in the fest. Sunday overall turned out to be an unforgettable day... so much good music and so many adventures that I will be thinking about all summer while missing my friends who came to DEMF. I overdid it quite a bit at the fest, and didn't make it out to after parties immediately after the festival... so glad Patrick talked me into going to Droid late rather than skipping it completely, as Silent Servant's set was just what I needed and was one of the better sets of the weekend.

On Monday, I introduced my siblings to Old Miami and the Need I Say More Party... they were a bit bemused by some of the attendees but seemed to have fun. Since I'd been up for 30 hours, and still needed to spend some more time with my family, I ended up skipping the festival on Monday. There are some things I really wish I'd seen but dancing in the rain seemed like a bad idea when I'm going on another techno adventure next week. Feeling rested and eager to go dancing again, I got to Klockworks while they were still setting up the main room and was able to catch the opening acts. My biggest surprise of the weekend was one of the openers, JGarrett & Jay Zoney who were playing acid on the patio in the rain at 11PM. Great way to kick off the night. My favorite set of the night was Recondite, though the front room was great all weekend.

    Top sets of the weekend:
#1 Planetary Assault System @ the Underground stage at the festival
#2 Squarepusher @ Red Bull stage at the festival
#3 Rrose @ Perc Trax at the Works
#4 Matador @ Beatport stage at the festival
#5 Silent Servant @ Droid at The Works
(Honorable mention to Recondite at Klockworks)

I'm so very happy with my choices and saw an unbelievable amount of mindblowingly good music, and I'm still totally upset about all the good stuff I missed. This festival is just on another level altogether.

Here is my summation I put in a different forum. They were all bitching about the fest. and a possible venue change so that's the angle I was responding too. Still very cool to come on this forum and see such energy for the fest from out of state people no less. I have said before it's hard for me to separate work, life, and partying for the whole weekend so I don't go to that much stuff ever. But after 11 years of going to some part of the festival and/or it's after parties this year was one of the top ones for me. Bummed I missed Monday at the underground stage but so it goes when you gotta work the holiday....

Funny. After all these years of bitching about the crowd and all of its' idiots...I actually really enjoyed this year. Really, really enjoyed it!

I went majority of both Saturday and Sunday and that was it. No afterparties for me this year. Maybe it's the near crushing stress of having 3 kids under 3 at home but just being down there was very liberating. I guess I could care less about the usual shit I worried about. Did I get close to any of stages? Not really. Did I go through the cattle stampede of a ramp in the underground stage? Only twice. Did I even get within 300 feet of the Electric Forest area? Hell no! Otherwise my brother and I just stayed on the peripheral and took it all in. Each time we went to the Beatport Stage we just snugged in in front of the sound board. Each time we went to the underground stage we snugged in at one of the railings. And it was fine.

I thought the underground stage had the best lineup for my tastes with Beatport/MID stages tied in a very close second. Some notable performances for me were: tommy four seven, riche Hawtin, Audion, art department, bill Patrick, Dan bell, slam, Nina kraviz, and al ester. But like I said I enjoyed most everything I stopped by for the most part. Wish I could have checked out more of the artisit like adult, Ben klock, and Stacey Pullen.

I do agree there needs to be a venue change or something. It was very crowded. Somethings going to have to give. How that undergrond stage area hasn't been a scene of trampling is beyond me. Thankfully they put the gate at Beatport stage otherwise that place would have overfilled into the Chicken on a stick place. Belle isle would would be a huge improvement and I hope the consider that over the next few years because hart plaza is becoming very limiting.

I really love Hart Plaza as a venue despite its problems and would hate to ever see it change, but I do think it's time to start thinking about lowering capacity. I don't think it's quite hit the tipping point yet where it's just too overfilled with too many idiots, but it's moving in that way. I noticed way more stupidity this year than in years past and although most of the crowd was lovely, it only takes a couple of idiots to fuck things up for everyone. The last couple of sets each day were definitely pretty overcrowded, especially on Beatport and the main (the underground got a lot better after Saturday afternoon I thought, although I avoided it most all of Monday because I knew people hiding from the rain would dominate it and I had plenty of other shit I wanted to see). I couldn't get anywhere near Squarepusher and gave up and ended up at Dan Bell, which was perfect.

If tough to make a real decision as to what my real favourites of the weekend were but in general I pretty much had more fun at any set at either the Beatport stage or the Made In Detroit stage than any other stage. The other stages all kind of sucked in comparison actually. When it came to dancing, groovin, and being fun in general, the crowds at the other stages never came close. Plus the Beatport stage owned sound-wise. Damn that was a powerful soundsystem.

Yea, it felt much, much more crowded to me this year (I've only gone these past three years), and Saturday especially seemed crowded at every single stage much earlier in the day than I've seen in the past. I also thought the audience it attracted (as a whole) wasn't quite as enjoyable as in previous years, but with those things said, it's not reached the same level as the other festivals I've gone to in terms of negative crowd behavior and overcrowdedness. but it did make me wonder what next year will be like... I'm afraid festivaling and electronic music are just becoming too popular. For some reason I didn't think these things would effect Detroit since the festival has been around for more than a decade. We'll see....
