I wouldn't buy it for just that reason if it's a deciding factor. The festival is not by any means overcrowded, and there are several spots where you can chill out.
My favorite is a huge grassy area close to the beatport stage (where Richie filled in for Ricardo Villalobos last year) that overlooks the Detroit River/Windsor yet is close enough to the stage to feel like you're right in the middle of the tent.
Without music, life would be a mistake.... I would only believe in a God who knew how to dance - Friedrich Nietzsche

no explanation needed. Patrick and I spent most of our downtime here.

I'm assuming VIP isn't worth it for the actual VIP space.
Here is what sold me - considering it is $100 more.
I think the $100 will come back to me pretty quickly in drink tickets & discounts. If you're not going to drink at all, it's probably not worth it.Private bar - 6 complimentary drink tickets
Discounted drinks available at the VIP bar
Deluxe private executive bathroom trailers
Oh and I'm SO WEIRD about bathrooms at festivals, god help me I have a neurotic need to wash my hands at least a few times a day or I get freaked out by germs. I'm assuming VIP trailers will have running water and soap![]()
Firstly, Patrick, I'll suggest these additions to the list of recommendations on page 11:
69 (Carl Craig) Single: 4 Jazz Funk Classics
Guti Album: Patio de Juegos
Metro Area Single: Metro Area 2
Today's listening to far.
69 - The Legendary Adventures of a Filter King - this is basically a collection of 4 singles with a couple of newer mixes. This is more what had remembered. The older material worked for me a lot better than The Sound of Music. (There is some overlap with The Sound of Music but the singles are much more consistent for me). The entire "4 Jazz Funk Classics" disc is excellent.
Scuba's Triangulation - Need to give another listen as I kept getting distracted to do other things during it. Why did I think Scuba was dubstep? It's there on some tracks but he's more than that. A couple of my fav tracks below.
Loco Dice - 7 Dunham Place - saw him at Beyond Wonderland a couple of weeks ago, and prior to that I'd really only heard like 2 tracks in random mixes. There may be better places to start, I have no idea. Here's what I liked.
Okay now the stuff I wasn't so fond of
Marcel Dettman - Dettman... I wasn't really into this. A couple of good tracks but mostly eh. Any other suggestions?
Mimosa - Silver Lining ... granted I only made it through 3 tracks
Ramadanman - Ramadanman EP
Hudson Mohawke - Butter I actually listened to this this weekend, and it was so awful. Knew there was a reason I was avoiding it. How can something on Warp be so bad? Have they fallen that far since the 90's?
I've been kinda keeping track/rating everything I've checked out so far (including some refreshers on old albums I haven't listened to in years), which shapes up to something like this:
69 - The Sound of Music - 3/5
69 - 4 Jazz Funk Classics [ep] - 4.5/5
69 - pungtung [single] - 3/5
69 - Life is Music [single] - 3/5
Art Department - The Drawinng Room - 4/5
Art Department - Vampire Nightclub/Without You (Single) - 5/5
Ben Klock - One 2.5/5
Ben Klock - Berghain 04 (DJ Mix) - 4.5/5
Fatboy Slim - Better Living through Chemistry - 2.5/5
Green Velvet - The stalker (single) - 4/5
Green Velvet - The Nineties - 3/5
Guti - Patio de Juegos 3/5
Hudson Mohawke - Butter - 1/5
James Zabiela - Blame (single) - 5/5
Loco Dice - 7 Dunham Place 4/5
Marcel Dettman - Dettman 2.5/5
Metro Area - Metro Area - 5/5
Metro Area - Metro Area [Single] (1999) - 4/5
Metro Area - 2 [Single] (2000) - 4/5
Metro Area - 3 [Single] (2001) - 3/5
Metro Area - 4 [Single] (2001) - 4.5/5
Metro Area - 5 [Single] (2004) - 3/5
Metro area - 6 [Single] (2005) - 3/5
Metro Area - 7 [Single] (2007) - 3/5
Mimosa - Silver Lining 1.5/5
Ramadanman - Ramadanman EP - 2/5
Scuba - Triangulation - 3.5/5
I was just throwing it out there for people to check out. I didnt have time to write anything about it this morning at work.
Its in the same area as the Corktown Inn and has been getting a little attention locally from what a few of my friends are saying.
I usually stay with friends whenever I visit back home.

Resident Advisor "Best Festival in May"
http://www.residentadvisor.net/feature.aspx?1316
Surprised? You shouldn't be. Movement once again takes the crown for our May feature due to their effortless mix of mainstream and underground acts. Few other festivals will have Claude Young and Cio D'or rubbing shoulders with Fatboy Slim and Skrillex. This year boasts the world live debut of Carl Craig's 69 alias, as well as a rare American visit from Cocoon boss Sven Väth. There is also a strong Desolat contingent coming to town: Loco Dice, Martin Buttrich, Pulshar, Guti and Livio & Roby will all perform. And then there's DJ Harvey, Dam-Funk and Echospace. At no other festival does this sort of variety seem to make as much sense. But that's the beauty of Movement over the past few years. It's got something for everyone.
Just booked my flight. Getting into Detroit at 5:30 on Friday, leaving Detroit at 12:30 on Wednesday.
5/25-5/27: MOVEMENT DETROIT
6/6: The Field @ The Independent
6/26: Colin Stetson @ The Chapel
Nice. It's a 6 hour drive from me yet I haven't gone before. This year will be my first. Then MUTEK in Montreal starts 3 days later, which I'm considering doing in addition (been to in 08,09) and is less dance-oriented than I would expect DEMF to be but is a good time too. Modeselektor!

Looks like VIP is almost sold out.
Rhythm is a dancer.
Can't wait for additions. I'm a bit meh about Felix da Housecat as a headliner... Im hoping that the Red Bull stage is loaded.
Rhythm is a dancer.
No clue. I'm definitely goin to check him out though.
Rhythm is a dancer.
He's terrible. Last two times I've seen him it was nothing like his stuff from the 90's. Sold out to "indie-electro-house" as of a few years ago (he played MGMT - Kid's remix at the peak of his set both times). I will be staying far away from that stage when he plays.
Yea, I've not heard anything good about Felix in the last half decade or more.
that's strange...i'm thinking back to the many times I've had the opportunity to see Felix and chose not to... at least 8 times. He's been to coach like, 3 or 4 times??? I wonder what we can expect...
oh well, what SD says- it is quite easy to get to another stage if you're not feeling a certain act
