Well that's cool man, sounds like you got an amazing fest season lined up! Devin, yea the competition is very fierce; with two super comfortable festivals going on the same week as this one in "Detroit!" (said in an alarming tone) there are hardly any west coasters in attendance. I know you guys would love it, you do too, but priorities and logistics are important factors here. Having done it solo, met up with a few boardies and a ton of amazing strangers, Demf feels like something that will be a part of me for as long as I'm in this country. I love celebrating electronic music in this fashion; it's perfect for me.

Pilgrim, man I am tempted.. and if everyone else is cool I'm for it. I've ben looking at the hyatt and the casinos, but I believe that could easily be a waste of money considering the options available and the time you spend in your room. Plus I hear the place is safe.

I think pretty much everyone wants to go to DEMF. But some of us have other priorities and can't afford to do it all. No doubt DEMF is a great party and Detroit has an unparalleled music history. No doubt its a party with some class, soul, and generally fucking awesome music. I want to go. We want to go. We just have other shit going on. But the way you keep coming off about it really makes it seem like you are on your high horse because you have been to DEMF and everyone who hasn't been are just know-nothings listening to soulless music and attending classless events.

We know, Forza. DEMF is awesome. I don't think anyone (except Ronnie's blind loyalty to Miami) is going to dispute that. If I had the ability to spend the $1000 to do DEMF, I would. But I don't.

There is more out there beyond music festivals, buddy.

I suspect quite a few dB and Mutek artists and then three or four big headliners... but we all know DEMF isn't about 'omg the chemical bros!'. It's a celebration of the wide range and variety of electronic music; the known and the unknown.

YES! Yesyesyesfuckingyes.

All trivializing overexuberence aside; Decibel Festival showed me that a mix of original Detroit Techo, throwback Chicago House, along with a smattering of global minimalists and progressives like his hootenanny offers is second to none. To be blunt, it made 3/4 of the edm on offer at major music festivals seem really lame.

Circumstances permitting I'm making every effort to attend. The biggest hurdle is definitely that goddamn airfare, shit's like half the trip budget.

But in the mean time I'm going to attempt to save and see what happens.

Its $40 for a reason. The reason being its the same rehashed lineup every other year. Go to 2 or 3 & you've been to all of them.

That's cool, I'm glad that's not the reasoning you want to go. In response to your question, it would be bad because they are 2 completely different types of events. While both are electronic music festivals they are both great for different reasons. When you go into something looking to compare it to something else instead of just looking to have an amazing time you don't exactly get the same experience. Or at least that's how I see it.

it wasn't an adequade substitution, but it was better than an empty timeslot, that's for sure. I ahd fun being ten feet away from richie hawtin dancing in the trees next to the river with a giant v-dosc hang pointed at my head.

I can understand DEMF not being on the top of people's list of priorities, but if you can get a round trip flight or bus ticket for a hundred bucks or so (that's the limit I'd put, it only cost me like $20 round trip >.< ), it's hands down the best bang for your buck you can get at an outdoor fest, and the atmosphere is so fucking fantastic. everyone from detroit, even the POLICE, are just happy to be out with lots of other happy people partying and having a good time. seriously- cops decked out in mardi gras beads and DETROIT=REAL TECHNO pins, dancing to the beat as they direct traffic outside the gates. and drink vendors inside that don't bat an eyelash when you ask for five shots of vodka in one cup, and a can of red bull.

I really really want anyone that can do it to come down this year. I promise you won't regret it. it's not coachella, but it's not meant to be. it's a straight-up, balls-to-the-wall PARTY of the finest degree.

Damnit I always spell vinyl wrong haha, but yeah I didn't know that about him either until I read RA's top 100 DJ's of 2010 and it said he almost purely plays vinyl. When you see someone spinn strictly wax it's a true showcase of mixing ability. No traktor helping you match beats, no ableton helping you out here and there, just pure talent. I've seen Andy C do the "3 deck vinyl assault" as it was called when I saw it, such an amazing showcase of talent.

Amon did a 4-deck Vinyl only set in Seattle @ Neumo's (sp?) in 2009. That one seems to be a pretty popular recording floating around the interweb. It's amazing too.

For people who went last year, what was your biggest surprise and why?

DJ godfather. I'd never enjoyed booty house and ghetto tech for longer than 3 minutes before. I had no idea the guy was such an intense turntablist. and the cheesiness just felt totally okay because everyone (and I mean EVERYONE) was hammered and dancing and happy. a perfect example of how demf makes stuff even better than it'd normally be.

best was plastikman. the location, the personal touches he brought to the set (and it was longer than an hour), the unbelievable sound (best sound I've heard anywhere outside coachella [or one of my soundsystems! teehee!]) and the crowd. and drinking a camelback full of OJ and vodka and smoking a couple grams of kif with awesome coachella board company during his set didn't hurt either
