Hahaha. You guys were definitely at a low point in general that morning. And there were porta potties out back.

Need I Say More is happening. There was very little info about it last year other than a line-up on RA in May as Guedita said. There will be no pre sale tickets. Just $10 at the door.

I am considering more of a pre than after party strategy this year. Thinking of doing Sat night afterparty (possibly a few hours of sleep) into Shit Show/Sunday festival then forgoing Sunday night afters for some sleep to prepare for Old Miami. I've said it before, last year Need I Say More was the highlight of the weekend for me. I'm a big fan of morning/afternoon raves.

Does this mean that phone calls at 6AM are welcome?

I'm also really into this morning party thing this year, though I don't know if that means pre-party or after-after party in my case.

Look, I really wanted to go to that Magda party. I was only upset that I waited around for like 2 hours waiting for everyone else to be ready to go, then no one even went with me, and by the time I got there, it was over capacity. Fair enough reason to be annoyed, I think.

And I don't remember being upset about it for long.

You guys ever notice that Techno is fucking boring? It's hilarious to me that there's such a thing as tech-house. It's like, "well, both these things are boring steady 4/4 shit. Let's meld them together. OOO, could we make it really minimal too? Like, just a kick every single beat, an intermittent snare and hi-hat roll, and a faint repetitive bass line. FUCK YEAH."

Last time I went to DEMF was 2002...

I went with someone who was local to the area (although they had recently moved to the East Coast) and asked a similar question...

    Their advice: don't

Yea, that answer is ridiculous. Sounds like someone from the suburbs who was afraid of downtown and never really went there anyway. As for "seeing" Detroit, I'd just get out and about, though having a car would make it easier.

For more touristy things, the Institute of Arts has one of the largest collections in the US (and is pretty close to the hotels / festival). Worth visiting for the Diego Rivera murals, but they have a pretty well rounded collection in general. (Think about how much money was coming into Detroit in the first half of the 20th Century). I've heard the Detroit Historical Society exhibits are decent too. "Greektown" is super touristy but there are a couple of OK places to eat. I went to the Motown Museum a long time ago and remember it being pretty underwhelming.

I'd probably just focus on architecture, whether the stuff that's still standing and inhabited, or the stuff that's abandoned and in decay.

I'm sure you've seen this stuff:
    http://www.forgottendetroit.com/
    http://www.dailytelegraph.com.au/det...-1226008639304
    http://www.thecoolist.com/the-ruins-...romain-meffre/

^^ I'd really like to visit some of those. I don't think of Detroit as being really all that dangerous, but of course if you're going to go poking around condemned or abandoned buildings, you'd want to be careful.

    As far as seeing Detroit:

There are techno bike tours here: http://www.wheelhousedetroit.com/tou...aspx?tourid=32

If you are awake on Saturday going to the Eastern Market is always good people watching. http://www.detroiteasternmarket.com/ Farm fresh fruit, homemade goods, stores, restaurants, artists galleries. Best pizza joint in the city is Suppinos right on the side of the market. Nice graffiti around there too. Plus bonus points if you see others walking around with a Movement wrist band! In fact this would be the most "authentic Detroit" experience.

Russell Industrial Center is a huge artists community. They have a bazaar open but I have heard the merch available isn't the best (thinks socks, belts and used CD/DVD's). But some of the artists there have their studios open to check out stuff. Haven't done this myself but there are legitimate galleries there. http://ricdetroit.org/2010/?id=home

Guardian building lobby is a sight to behold. It's right downtown. Couple clothing stores and coffee shops in there as well.

Heidelberg would be a short cab away from the city but is always pretty cool. http://www.heidelberg.org/

Just walking around the midtown area (where old miami is) is neat. It's thriving again. A few stores, restaurants, wayne state university, DIA, Historical museum, artist galleries are all in this area. http://detroitmidtown.com/05/directory.php?msub=6

For the good Christians out there there are many architecturally fascinating churches in the downtown and surrounding areas. Sweetest Heart of Mary, Old St. Mary's, SS peter and paul jesuit, holy trinity etc. etc. Google those names or historic detroit churches and you could spend a day checking them out!

As far as seeing the abandoned buildings:

I don't do it but it is done quite often. Do be careful and it is not recommended. Some moron, and it happens about once a month, had to get rescued from falling down a few flights of stairs in the train station last week. Plus in most of the buildings illegal scrapping is going on and you don't want to get caught up with those people. Also most of the buildings in and around downtown are either being rehabbed, have been torn down, or are better secured lately. (Places I have heard lately require ladders to get in and dodging security guards.) You have to go some of the outlying warehouse areas and most of those buildings aren't all that significant really and are more dangerous and loaded with scrappers. If you want to go back home saying you walked around an abandoned building in Detroit go ahead and give it a shot I guess, but it could be a quick way to end your weekend.

    Restaurants that I can recommend:

Downtown: Detroit Beer Co., Suppinos, Mudgies Deli, Russel St. Deli, Bucharest Grill, Slows BBQ, Small Plates (if you want a nice night out), American or Lafayette coney islands, Grand Trunk Pub (A.K.A. Foran's-they'll have technos throughout the weekend with awesome Michigan microbrews!!!), above Grand Trunk Pub is Motor City wine for the vino lovers out there and they are also techno music friendly, Jacoby's for good beer. Any of the bars downtown will always have a decent burger available otherwise google the rest of the places for locations and hours.

Midtown: Honest John's Bar, Union Street, Avalon Bread Co., Cass Cafe, Byblos, Slows BBQ to go (much quicker than the sit down restaurant) Motor City Brew Works (they supply the beer for Need I Say More), Traffic Jam and Snug. There are a bunch more places near the university that I am not sure will be open because the students won't be there.

Have fun! As with any city travel in a group, don't look or act like a moron.

Grand Trunk Pub/Motor City Wine is how we kind of ruined our Friday night last year. Thanks a lot, Carl Craig.

And yea, I'm hesitant to suggest prowling about abandoned buildings, but I know tons of people who've done it and no one has had a problem. I wouldn't go by myself, or at night. I think SoulDischarge would make a good bodyguard.

I went into Packard Plant at night and was just fine. Although I wasn't alone . . . And Heidi, you're forgetting I'm kind of a pussy.

Thanks for all the recs though! I scheduled myself to get in Thursday so I could have some non-DEMF related Detroit time.

NM, you already mentioned it on the last page. Glad you have seen it. The old car plants are worth exploring. Security might be a bit heightened though since its the biggest weekend in Detroit. A Tigers game should be on peoples radar too, its actually not a bad place to see a game. There is another great art space too, can't remember the name though, but it is off the beaten path...gets really gritty at night though.
