Would you count Jacques Brel? He was Belgian but sang in French in the 50s and 60s. I would recommend the 2-CD version of the Quand On N'a Que L'Amour compilation (Spotify).

I wasn't sure if Jacques Brel would fall into that category, but his catalog is great. His Integrale box set is fantastic. There was actually a series of box sets with that title cataloging the most famous French artists. There's a great Integrale for France Gall as well.

So im heading to punk rock bowling soon, and even though I have listened to damaged a bunch I still have not jumoped into the Black Flag catalogue. Was wondering if anyone has suggestions of what they think FLAG will play and what albums I should dive into a bit more?

They've played a few shows so far, and it's pretty much all been either from Damaged and a compilation of the early EPs/Singles called The First Four Years. They've done one or two songs from My War (the ones that Dukowski wrote.) I'd recommend just listening to The First Four Years: you'll cover 95% of the set.

And if you want to listen further just to listen to good music, check out My War and Loose Nut, two of the three best later albums.

    Pinback.

They're coming to town and I want to know if they're any good.
We're here to play some Mississippi Delta Blues. We're in a horrible depression, and I gotta admit - we're starting to like it.

These are good choices. The first three Chic albums are great.

The Saturday Night Fever OST is another good starting point. The Bee Gees jams on there are fucking great:

As far as Giorgio Moroder goes, start here and branch out:

I would recommend, when branching out with Moroder, to start with From Here To Eternity.

This is a good middle ground between Philly soul and disco...this jam was big at the Loft in NYC when all that shit was going down.

Danny Krivit is one of the kings of edits, if not the king. This is a pretty sick edit of "Love is the Message":

There's a good compilation called David Mancuso presents The Loft that collects a lot of tracks that were big there.

I knew someone had one of his albums on there, and I remember looking back at that thread later and wondering what album it was because (I think) there was just a photo and a description. So thanks! I'm going to listen to that right away.

Crooked Rain, Crooked Rain. I like two albums better than it, but it's the best entry point.

I, Jonathan is a definitely a good starting point. It's accessible and has some of his more well known solo songs including quite possibly my personal favorite "That Summer Feeling." From there I'd go to You Must Ask The Heart, which again has some more recognizable songs, and then Not So Much To Be Loved As To Love, which happens to be the most recent of my recommendations here (2004).

You really cannot go wrong with any of his albums though. They all are full of little gems. Also would recommend Having A Party With Jonathan Richman and Surrender To Jonathan. So many good songs on so many good albums from him!

Maybe a little late, but stoked I got to reply to bmack in this thread!

he's going to serenade you with quiet love songs, keep a smile on your face, show off a couple of dance moves, and quite possibly make you cry.

Thanks man! I've always wanted to delve further into his catalog after holding the Modern Lovers as one of the single best albums ever released. Based on both yours and Rey's recs, I'm gonna start with I, Jonathan, and then I'll check out the others.
