I've recently been talked out of suggesting Painful. I maintain it's their best album, but it's true that it's nowhere near representative of actual YLT stuff since it just mines one sound so perfectly. I think I agree with y'all on ICFTHBAS.

my opinion is in these situations, where you're trying to get an understanding of a band for a show, you're better off with a compilation.

i would say that Songs For the Deaf, Rated R, and s/t are all MUST HAVES, but I would rate them in that order. Those are 3 fucking killer albums.

BUT for some reason one of, if not my very favorite songs by them is from the Kyuss/QOTSA split, "Born To Hula"

EDIT: wow, re-listening to this split after a while, these really are 3 of QOTSA's best songs, right here.

Robyn had a very varying career. I'd go with her 2005 s/t and Body Talk. Her earlier work is really different.

I started Royksopp with Junior and found that to be a fine starting place. you could probably go in sequential order of release though, their catalogue is pretty great.

This is probably my favorite Nick Cave song:

It's a shame they never play it.

EDIT* Now that I think about it, Dig, Lazarus, Dig!!! is probably more accessible.

I'll concur. They've got plenty of top quality albums, though I Can Hear the Heart Beating as One is my absolute favorite.

Henry's Dream, no question. It distills everything that's great about the band into 9 songs.

I did a full write-up about the band, with recommendations, in this thread right here.
