Just wait til it's summertime and you can listen to Portrait of an Artist in an air-conditioned car as you cruise around. Sam was one of the ultimate good mood musicians, and his version of Jesus Gave Me Water at the end is definitive for me.

So far I'm almost done giving Live At The Harlem Club, 1963 and it's blowing me away. Talk about a performer, the crowd interaction is great too. Remember the discussion on greatest live albums in the Default Thread? I can already tell this is it for me, easily. Looking forward to hearing Portrait as well! And oooh, I can just imagine summertime cruisin' to this record

It's a tough call amongst soul and funk live records for me, but I would probably have to give it to Otis Redding at Monterey Pop, even though it's a 5 song set. Just perfection.

Yes! That's another gem! Any other similar soul artists I should check out? I'm really only familiar with Otis, Gaye, Irma Thomas, Nina Simone, and now Cooke.

Much of the early soul stuff is focused around singles. That said, you need to check out the first two Sam and Dave albums, Booker T. and the MGs for instrumental stuff (Hip Hug Her would be my choice of albums), and then the twin peaks of Wilson Pickett and later Jackie Wilson (Your Love (Liftin' Me Higher) is my favorite soul song and just about my favorite song ever.) The Stax/Volt singles collections from the early 90s are essential for that gritty soul sound.

Oh and Al Green. Smooth soul, but his stuff is just jaw droppingly good, and he did albums better than almost anyone else in the genre.

Of course! One more to check out is D'Angelo - Voodoo. It's my favorite soul/funk album since Parliament/Funkadelic and Roger Troutman quit being impressive.

Lurk away. I'm not sure how accurate those reading are as I don't have a reliable scrobber, but i have been listening to a lot of Frank Ocean's new one, speaking of great r&b albums. I can't get over "Thinkin Bout You." Excellent musicial recommendations from people on here is one the reason I came on board those many years ago.

Syl Johnson - Complete Mythology (1958-1972) (One of the greatest anthologies of soul ever; forgotten legend really)
James Carr - You Got My Mind Messed Up (1966) (Incredible southern soul; Otis Redding's rival)
Percy Sledge - When a Man Loves a Woman (1966) (Yes, that title is exactly what you think)
The Impressions - The Impressions (1963) (Curtis Mayfield in the early 60s)
Sam Cooke - Night Beat (1963) (Amazing Sam session)

And some great later stuff/ TSOP stuff

Roy Ayers - He's Coming (1972) (One of my all-time favorite musicians, deeeeep catalogue of cuts)
Billy Paul - 360 Degrees of Billy Paul (1972) (Good, trippy, weird intro to TSOP; covers for days and he kills all of them)
Baby Huey - A Living Legend (1971) (Genius compilation by the late great Huey; psychedelic soul)
Gil Scott Heron & Brian Jackson - It's Your World (1976) (Gil's best album if you ask me; Home is Where the Hatred Is)

My favorite by them is Treasure. You also can't go wrong with Heaven or Las Vegas.

The singles and EPs compilation Lullabies to Violaine is a great alternative overview of the band, covering their whole career. They released a ton of singles and EPs, so you can really chart the changes they made as they developed.

I started off with Miami,Henry Rollins says Pastoral Hide and Seek is his favorite, and everyone seems to LOVE Fire of Love..

I would though say start off with The Las Vegas Story(studio release) and Ahdem's Wild Dream(a later in their career live album)


I maybe be very bias but you cant go wrong with any of their studio albums.
