Well, and especially that one. It's so dense and wild.

Brian Ferry. Not Roxy Music, but solo albums.

These Foolish Things. It's his first solo record. It's a covers album, but it's really good and he tends to be really cover heavy anyway.

Popol Vuh; I have no clue where to start with them as it seems like they are pretty varied in terms of sound from one album to the next (and there are a lot of albums).

For Husker Du, as much as I think Zen Arcade is their best work, you should probably go with New Day Rising, and here's why. Zen Arcade is (like Double Nickels) very long. The production on it is also pretty lacking (they're all first takes of live-in-studio recordings), but the songs are huge. New Day Rising has slightly preferable production and the songs are huge. It's also quite a bit shorter, so a better entry point.

The Feelies - Crazy Rhythm and JAMC - Psychocandy are both no-brainers, in that the bands never put out anything quite as good after them.

I'm jealous as hell that you get to hear the Minutemen and Husker Du for the first time.
ah, thanks a lot man, I'll definitely get all those recommended. haha yeah, I've always wanted to get into them but for some reason just never did. i mean i've heard a couple songs by each artist and they sounded great, but i can't wait to explore their catalog!

Husker Du and The Minutemen are two of the bands that I listen to more than any other. They both have insanely great catalogs with very few duds.

I don't think I've ever given Husker Du a listen. I'll have to do that this evening.

Oh man, I'm SO jealous of you guys!

Matt, check out the song Turn on the News. If that doesn't sell you on the majestic power of Husker Du, we might not be able to be friends.

Take a bunch of speed first.

My definitive Husker song is the "Eight Miles High" cover:

The first album, Copper Blue. They have a much smaller discography (really, all you need is Copper Blue, the Beaster EP and File Under: Easy Listening), but are just as full of blistering pop rock. Great band.

Chartered Trips is my favorite Husker Du song. Fuzzy goodness.

To all you guys who helped me with Husker Du, I just bought Zen Arcade on vinyl and I'm listening to it now. About 5 songs in and, wow, this is amazing. Why the fuck haven't I listened to these guys before? Anyways, thanks.

Bryan already covered it. Honestly, you should just get everything. Copper Blue is one of my all-time favorite albums. Beaster is a companion piece to that, and it is also really good (but darker.) File Under: Easy Listening is very good but not as strong as the first two. Besides has some really good tunes, and The Joke is Always on Us, Sometimes is a pretty good document of how powerful they were live.

Fun fact: I checked out Sugar because Dani told me they were the loudest concert she has ever seen, including MBV. Supposedly they were colossally, stupidly loud. Which is awesome.

I used to listen to Zen Arcade on a cassette tape I borrowed from the library when I was a teenager. I still always think of it as two sides because of that. /csb

I used to listen to JSBE so much. Orange is definitely one of the albums that got me into indie/indie-blues. Black Keys early albums too.

Check out the Gun Club. Dope band

Orange and Now I Got Worry are the two best JSBE albums by far.

Sugar apparently won't be touring, but Bob plans on doing Copper Blue shows, including one at Noise Pop in SF.

I'm always taken aback by statements like these, but then I remember that I'm old.

Also, while Psychocandy is the obvious choice for the Jesus and Mary Chain, I also think Honey's Dead comes a close second. I could even see it being a more accessible entry point for folks who might be turned off by the sheer noise of their debut, or for those who prefer the dancier side of the band.

Glad you recommended this. These Foolish Things wasn't bad, but reminded me too much of a Vegas crooner and I won't listen to it again. I liked Boys and Girls and even recognized some of the songs.
