beyond these recommendations, which are excellent, comes a time and tonight's the night are favorites of mine. really you can't go wrong with any of his late 60's-70's work.

    Suicide - Suicide
The first album is where it's at with that band. After that, they tamed themselves quite a bit and lost quite a bit of the insanity that made them so special. The second album is good, and I've not really heard many good things about most of their later releases. The first one is insanely good though

Orange Juice - The Glasgow School
Their albums were almost all really good and catchy and sophisticated pop, but I think this collection of their early singles and the rejected original master of their first album is the best you'll get. You can hear Franz Ferdinand and Belle and Sebastian in these songs in a great way. Really cool little release.

My favorite is Teaser and the Firecat, although you'll hear the most about Tea for the Tillerman.

Especially Bitterblue! One of the more overlooked songs ever in my book:

    4/17 - Mogwai - El Rey (?)
    4/27 - Ghost BC - Fonda (?)
    4/29 - Franz Ferdinand - Wiltern (?)
    4/30 - Mono - Troubadour (?)
    5/03 - Philip Glass - Royce Hall

I really wanted to suggest something else that would have some of their early, well known singles, but really this is the Kinks album that you have to hear. The lyrics are strong, yearning for a simpler life while at the same time acknowledging the inevitable force of change. There aren't any hits off of this, but every song is great and catchy and memorable, and somehow they are made even better when listened to as a whole. I love listening to this album during Fall/Winter months, as it perfectly captures the sad nostalgia that those seasons inspire in me.

So I bought a ticket for Yo La Tengo in Oakland, but I've only ever listened to I Am Not Afraid... and that was only one time. So what should I check out?
