Animal Collective

this order sounds good - MPP, Strawberry Jam, Feels
Suede
I'd say starting with Strawberry Jam is better. That is where I started, I think if you like that you are more likely to enjoy going father back in their career and the newer stuff will be enjoyed even more.
If you like happy (sometimes obnoxiously so) pop music then start with SJ. If you like more laid back, psychedelic, 60's (yet still poppy in that way) music then start with MPP.
MPP is what got me into them, personally.

What these guys said.
I would say Rain Dogs... if for no other reason than "Gun Street Girl."
EDIT: Actually, Jared might be right here. Primus covered "Big in Japan" when we saw them in Vegas.
Just grab both.
Has Guided By Voices already been mentioned?
Also, Roxy Music.

For 2011
i adore Avalon, but I'm more of a fan of Roxy Music adult contemporary stuff for some reason. It's a like an album of prom slow dance songs.

Jandek
Sparks
Television
There is no good entry point to Jandek. Though his late-80s/early-90s output is the most accessible. Just download everything you can and see what's up. He is amazing, but most definitely not accessible.
Television = Marquee Moon
I like what i've heard from Ready for the House.
I forgot to put down
Mew
Yeah Zach, Jandek is kind of an all-in or all-out sorta guy. He has albums that aren't as good, but really if you enjoy one you'll be able to fall into that deep, dark, weird hole that is his catalog.
