That guy writes some seriously funny shit.

I had heard some Lil B, I even wrote an article on him, enjoyed the fact he could work an Elliott Smith sample, but I had no fucking clue this album would be on some Stars Of The Lid-type shit with some of the most, mind-expanding, off-the-top-of-his-head, motherfucking honest rhymes. This album is damn near as lush as all the ambient shit I just listed, but then you get this motherfucker rhyming over it, and it's just honest, gripping shit you can't help but wholly pay full attention to. This isn't for the casual hip-hop fan. This is some seriously epic shit.

He's a good guy. His reviews are refreshingly frank and less inclined towards the obnoxious posturing that infects most music criticism these days.

I think he also co-heads the Bathetic Records label.

Not disagreeing with you at all. I find it almost impossible to write about music I love. That guy's approach makes as much sense to me as anything.

Agreed. I've had an idea for a pretty cool thread but it would involve writing about ~40 albums I really enjoy and keep going back to. I don't even know where to start!

Another thing Watson does well is right about music that is a bit difficult to describe generally... It's typical for reviewers of more experimental or amorphous music to just swap out adjectives and descriptions and call it a day...

I can't write worth shit though, so it's not difficult to impress me.

That IMPOSE list is the most NPR White Guy thing I've read in weeks, not that they are bad records or anything.

Frightened Rabbit are dreadfully uneventful though. One never-ending grating nasal sound carrying on forever in bland perpetuity.

I participated in my first "year end" music list deal for PopMatters last week, including writing a few blurbs about some albums and songs. I've no idea what it's going to look like when it's all put together, but I had fun doing it all the same. I'll post here when it goes live, which I believe it will in the next week or two.

Me too. I am intrigued though and want to check out a few of those bands. I have always enjoyed metal, but I just haven't ever given it any listening time.

    ahahahhahaha well put.

I like the Gaslight Anthem. I like American Slang. It is very enjoyable for me to listen to. I like it a lot, in fact, so please read the following sentences in that context. That band, and that album in particular, are so fucking derivative and unoriginal that I can't believe they'd make anybody's top 10 list, let alone album of the year. The fact that it is derivative of stuff I like is why I can enjoy the album. But it's filler for me, really - it doesn't engage me on any level other than 'this is fun'. I expect a lot more than that from my Album of the Year.

I also like, or rather used to like, Reckless Kelly a lot. in the late 90s/early 00s I probably saw them live half a dozen times. I had no idea they were still recording or that they had a new album out. I wound up stopping listening to them for the same reasons I imagine I'll wind up stopping listening to the Gaslight Anthem: They're derivative as hell and after a while, the fun gets old and when there's nothing else, there's nothing else.

Everything Everything should be in the top 20 and Deerhunter's pleasant but pedestrian record should switch with it.
I am glad to see Foals in at 06. That record was a real grower.
The NME list is a good reminder to revisit that Puritans record that I fell off because it was summer and my ears werent in the right mode for it at the time.

Holy shit, I didn't know Agalloch's new album had been released. This is some of the best news I've heard all year....I'm going to download that IMMEDIATELY. I'm certain it will rocket to the top of my year-end list too.

I will definitely be checking out that Agalloch album, and I sure hope that some of the other albums on the metal list kick some serious ass. I want to see Brandon Stosuy's end of the year list; he always picks a few metal albums I fall in love with.

    nothing surprising really.
I like Paste, for the most part, usually, and so I am surprised by how oafish and clumsy the first sentence of their writeup on High Violet is.

If MGMT colors its musical canvas with fluorescent candy-scented magic markers, and Coldplay favors the niceness of pastel watercolors, The National’s output resembles a painstaking charcoal sketch with dramatic interplay between light and shadow.

Fuck yeah, I'm listening to it now and it's pretty much everything I expected out of Agalloch. Have you heard their previous albums? They are all incredible so I recommend getting right on that.
