Default The Cocktail and Liquor Lounge

Ok, because of some demand and not wanting to steer the Beer Thread in a different direction, here is the liquor thread.

Feel free to discuss fine spirits, liquors, cocktails, etc. Please try not discuss that crazy night on Four Loko; there is another thread for that.

Do you have your own recipes for something delicious? Have you been to a bar and had a hand crafted cocktail that amazed you? What are you secret ingredients for a good drink? What spirits do you enjoy sipping straight up?

    Have at it. Cheers!

I failed to get my bartending degree in college because I shook a screwdriver all over the front row.

    My two favorite mixed drinks:
    White Russian
    Coke with Malibu and Lime

I'm not a big drinker but when I do drink I drink those two...

I'll begin with a martini I made last winter for a dinner my brother and I cooked for our family. The main dish was an apricot stuffed pork loin.

24 hours before, i made my own rosemary salt. This involved muddling fresh rosemary leaves and kosher salt. The Kosher salt is more flakey and more absorbent to the oils of the rosemary. Then I let that sit for 24 hours.

Then I took some of the apricots we were using in the pork and boiled them down in water and sugar, making my own apricot simple syrup.

So in a shaker, I added the apricot simple syrup, Cap Rock's organic gin distilled from apples, Domaine de Canton's Ginger liquor that had been aged in French cognac barrels, and a dash of fresh squeezed lime. The martini glass was rimmed with the rosemary salt and garnished with a rosemary sprig.

    Not too bad.

I'm not a huge Manhattan fan because I think most are made too sweet. However, High West's Rye Whiskey is great because the spice from the rye really shines through. I also recommend using an orange peel as a garnish, the acidity complements the whiskey well

Yeah I always use a lemon peel. I really know nothing about making Manhattans, though. The only time I make one is if I'm at my parents' house, because they have these two different bitters that are really good.

The bitters can be key, especially in a good Old Fashioned. I was at a bar last night were they made an orange and pepper bitters that complemented the drink real well, it had single malt scotch and absinthe in it.

Orange is the way to go.

My favorite drink is lemons muddled with vodka and the teensiest bit of simple syrup and then shaken with ice and chili flakes and then topped off with soda. Soooo good.

Haha I think I get it from my girlfriend. Like when I drink around my friends they are always trying to drink on the cheap so I stay away from whatever they are having and have what my girlfriend orders. They are always fucking delicious.

Jack Daniels runs in the blood of my dad's side of the family, we all drink tons of it when we get together for the holidays and if you mix it with anything (especially Coke) you're a dead man.

I like the idea of experimenting with chili and other spicy peppers. Anyone done much of that? I've made dirty vodka martinis with jalapeno slices in there, and thats tasty

That's called a Bloody Caesar? I've never heard that, and I only use Clamato when making a Bloody Mary. It's just the best.

Mix with a little water and drink over ice. In the summer, mix halfsies with lemonade and drink over ice.

Shake with ice and a bit of milk; strain into a martini glass.

i've been on a whiskey kick of late and did a little tasting last night at a local bar (all straight with a few cubes). I had the following:

(very nice with a hint of spice)

(a bit too smoky for my taste...reminds of how i find Patron)

(not bourbon, but oh so fucking good)

going to buy some Bulleit and JDSB next time i hit the BevMo. Chris, i don't drink Manhattans, but Makers Mark is a fine choice. But, you might want to try it with Bulleit next time.

and SleepyBrew...you are something. will you bartend my next party, please.

I have been wanting to make my own and have been thinking about that very thing. i live in a Mexican neighborhood and have a plethora of clamato options at the local market. Glad to hear it works well.

My friend made some gingerbread vodka recently that turned out pretty good. I believe he just added brown sugar, cinnamon, and some other ingrediants into a mixing bowl with an entire bottle of vodka and let the flavors infuse for a few days and then strained out all of the liquid.

He served it with some kaluha and it turned out to be a really good drink. It literally looked like a batch of shit, but a tasty one.
