Describing deep house as something that elicits strong emotions can be said about any other electronic sub-genre or genre of music depending on the person and the environment. I get more feeling in my blood from certain techno in a dark club then from deep house. The reverse when its day time, outside, in 90F summer weather ha. Its not replacing deep house but using that writers definition for deep house doesn't help define the genre at all but further perpetuates the confusion.

Ross you've been in the club too long, that article is what started this conversation in the first place!

Also I get that the author of that article uses some cringe-inducing language, and in general writing about dance music is hard because you do have to kind of be there and feel it to get it, but I feel her in terms of being protective of the genre name. Imagine going to an electro party in 2013 expecting to hear this. If "Need U 100%" and Dusky become what people associate with deep house then where do the original deep house heads go, you know?

Pity that the blow-job house microgenre term for the likes of Hot Creations/Crosstown never really caught on.

I'm excited to (hopefully) go to the 90's throwback house party next weekend in SF, mostly because I have a good time partying with older house heads (this way I'm not the only one on the dance floor with a cane)

    8/16: Anthony Naples, Maxmillion Dunbar @ f8
8/18: Man Man @ The Chapel
    8/23-8/24: FYF Fest

9/3: Bear in Heaven @ The Independent
    9/24 - 28: Decibel Festival

It is interesting that during a time that everyone likes to create new genres for every new sound, deep house has actually expanded or just evolved bigger - what is considered house is much different then what it originally started as. I am definitely guilty of expanding deep house as a genre as it is much easier to tell someone that something is deep house then to explain what genre a song is that borrow elements from a few. I often have a hard time trying to pin certain songs when asked what it is. "This is house with some techno elements but with soul" doesn't help the average person nor is it fun to say but labeling it deep house makes more sense to them. In general, genre labeling is pretty futile today and good luck keeping up with all the different sub genre's if you are committed to staying true to the original intent and are not flexible expanding them.

But yeah I get what you are saying Trick. It must be very frustrating to those OG Deep House heads who have a particular sound to that genre that see a bastardization version get swept under the same label. They will probably need to be on the lookout for parties prefaced as such ie 90's throwback deep house party etc.

I'm trying to reconcile that with doing the show at PW too. 90's throwback may win.

I don't understand having a strong need to label things within sub-genres, unless you're shelving records in a music store or the digital equivalent.

Labeling is useful for me only because I enjoy feeling knowledgeable about music. Like, this guy I know was telling me he wasn't into the music at this club we were at. The DJ was spinning balearic house, for the most part -- and this dude insisted that his gf's brother, who regularly plays at Ruby Skye and is, from what I've seen in videos, your average electro/cheese house DJ "plays this same stuff." Oof. (He then went on to tell me that he loves the heavy stuff, dubstep, but did not know who Skream was, so...)

Also useful, for me, if I have a descriptor that narrows down my searches online for music in a similar vein. Even for people who aren't serious music diggers/listeners -- I told my friend that what she liked was space disco, and then she was quite happy to discover a plethora of things with that tag on soundcloud

Yes, but none of those other genres have thousands of releases where the sole lyrics are those declaring that whatever genre they are "is a feeling." Which is a shame, I'd love to hear a track that declares "Gamelan music is a feeling, you cannot control gamelan music, because gamelan music is a universal feeling."

I'm imaging this poor guy seeing Skream now, doing no research, and being completely confused what dubstep is.

Just saw that the Clifflight track was released earlier this summer on a Soul Clap compilation. It's on Spotify, Soundcloud, YT.

    Still a dope jam.

So, not technically house, but we were listening to this month's Fabric mix (DJ EZ) at work the other day and it reminded me how much I love this tune:

Also, I was unaware of that Paisley Underground magical bill at the Fillmore in December. Thanks to your signature for the heads up.

For the record, I would have lost it as well. If this were Coachella circa 2004-2006 he would probably end up on the bill.
