Default The Greek Theatre appreciation thread

surprised this one hasn't been created yet. well, the Greek just concluded their 2010 season with a stirring set from Massive Attack, which was not only my favorite show of 2010, but rivaled the '06 Radiohead show as all-time favorite there. i've been to quite a few shows at this venue, but the past couple have made me come to realize just how much i LOVE seeing shows there.

i must geek out a bit and talk about how much better the sound is there now. when i first started going to shows there, this was always the one aspect that left me a bit unsatisfied. well, no longer. i don't know what they've done, but the sound at the Greek now is, arguably, the best in the Bay Area. in particular, the bass. the subs they're using now produce amazingly clean, deep bass that vibrate my entire being.

I've yet to see a show here, and that deeply saddens me.

    AGREED!
Mars Volta in 2005 and Daft Punk in 2007 there, are still 2 of my favorite sets of all time.

I was pleasantly surprised too, I think it's been 3 years since I'd gone to a show there and the sound seemed a lot better. Gonna have to make more of an effort to go to shows there next season

there's not a bad seat in the whole place, it's breathtakingly beautiful, and the acoustics are phenomenal.

Its a great venue. I would put it up there as #1 or #2 outdoor venue that I have been to. (The Gorge being the only one that could knock it out of first place).

I got to see Pavement and Arcade Fire this year there, and both were great shows. Although, it did take me until the second half of the Arcade Fire show to realize that the sound is much better down in the "bowl" compared to the lawn.

I've been really impressed with the music venues that the Bay Area has, and the Greek is definitely up there with the best of them.

When does the 2011 season start? Sometime in April? Maybe we can get some Daft or Radiohead for 2011.

The sound is definitely better in the 'bowl'. I've mostly been in the lawn for previous shows (due to not being able to show up in a timely manner), if you're going with friends, it's definitely worth getting there early to grab a seat.

Yeah, I was there early enough for Arcade Fire, but we decided to go up to the lawn so that we were close to beer/food/bathrooms. But then the music wasn't loud enough so about half way through we drifted down towards the bottom and ended up watching the show from the side of the stage and the sound was a lot better. I definitely know for next time to get there a little earlier and just stake out a good spot, because its definitely worth it.

Although, it is nice to when you are on the top of the lawn section and you can see the city lights over the top of the stage. Thats a great view up there.

yeah, enter at the south gate too if you want good seats. barely anybody comes over to that side. Me and my buddy showed up at 5:40 and got front row center of the big stairs for massive attack and thievery and it was absolutely fantastic. just gotta remember to bring some of those foam arena seats cause that rock gets cold.

I attended two Greek shows this season. Highly enjoyed both experiences. I love that it is GA. The sound was great. Love the cool weather. And the walk up the hill is always fun. Beautiful place to see a show.

Yea, I don't have foam seats but I just bring a blanket or two -- serves to bundle up anything you don't want security to look at too closely too.

The Greek is nice and all, but I'd say "breathtakingly beautiful" is more than a little hyperbolic. It's a hill with some seats on it.

Having only moved to SF in Feb. '08, I only have 3 seasons under my belt at the Greek. But it is truly a great venue and I've seen some stellar shows. My first show ever was the R.E.M., Modest Mouse, the National in '08 and I've been hooked ever since. I've caught some solid performances in the 3 seasons... MMJ, David Byrne, Arcade Fire and some others and I'm always keeping an eye out. I like that I can count on BART as my designated driver home too!

nothing but love for the Greek. Saw STS9 there in '08. life changing. I'm never going to forgot those incredible columns framing the band, or how a light mist started falling during Luma Daylight right as the sun dipped down below the stage. Possibly the best STS9 performance I've ever seen and I'm almost embarrassed to admit how many of their shows I've been to at this point.
I'ma go ahead and say that I prefer it to Red Rocks, though maybe that's just my CA pride talking...

One of the things I'll miss about going to shows in the area is the Greek. Absolutely one of my favorite all-time music venues. Got to see The Shins, Wilco and Death Cab for Cutie shows there in the past 4 years, and I wish I had been able to see more shows there.
    Upcoming Shows:
    * Dillon Francis + Anamanaguchi -- December 28th

Going to Weekend 1 of Coachella 2014
