I want to know who the painter was at coachella. I so want a giant painting by him.

It was Mear One.

No need, it's Mear One without a doubt. LA Graffiti legend, dude's an amazing artist.
This one is done by who they are calling Vox Humana, which I would imagine is Vox, another old school graffiti legend.
it's a shame I can't find any pictures of the completed Mear One piece, I thought it was a lot better. Both artists were painting great art though. I've been a fan of Mear One for years. Would like to see more artists like this come back next year, possibly Saber, The Mac or Retna.
The Mac & Retna paint amazing pieces, check these out.

I adore El Mac. He is without a doubt my favorite contemporary artist. I've met him a couple of times, and he's also a genuinely nice guy.
He's got a lot of great pieces up in Phoenix:

A few years ago I watched Mear One work on this HUGE mural on the side wall of Thinkspace during their grand opening party. It's fucking amazing.

Meanwhile, Buffmonster was rocking the hell out of the back wall.

That was a fun party

I've never been the biggest fan of Buffmonster for some reason. That Mear piece is awesome though. Dudes been around for years. Watched him paint this one in the LA river at the meeting of styles..
The meeting of styles was a big permitted event in the LA river that brought many artists from LA and beyond, even international, to paint legally and for it to be up forever. It looked like this..
The city's buffsquad ended up painting over ALL of it on "accident" and now it is all lost. It was such an amazing event with a ton of amazing art.

Oh for sure, I mean more so that the "scene" for it out here is still more underground than it seems to be in LA (and, though there are a lot of artists that I really love based in LA, I'm also not suggesting that we can't hold our own where talent is concerned). You'll see artists painting live at hip-hop shows and things like that, but not on the scale that seems to happen out there. I think Phoenix is sort of up-and-coming in that regard - I'm starting to see a lot more of it in the downtown arts area.
LA is just a city out to ruin your life for graffiti. A crew out here called MTA that has always done serious damage went out and did the biggest piece of graffiti in the world down in a section of the LA river that spanned 3-4 blocks. See...
This picture really does it justice since the train behind it tell you how big it really is..
There are members of that crew getting sued by the city of Los Angeles for $1.4 million EACH! It's getting to the point out here where they are just cracking down, that Meeting of Styles was in 2007, a lot has changed over the years.
does mear one sell his work?
He is an art teacher at this school Concord in Santa Monica. Bunch of my home girls had his class
He used to have actual paintings on his website for sale, either thy didn't sell that great or the demand got too high for him to actually paint canvas to put on his site. He still sells posters of his painting, just not the actual paintings.
