Anyone else remember reading this on the AA flight to or from Palm Springs in April? It foreshadows yesterday's news release.

Personal memories from the AV Club's staff. A good read, similar to some of the stuff that has been shared here.

^that was my first show ever at the Greek in Berkeley, as I didn't move to SF until Feb. '08. I surprised my wife (gf at the time) with the tickets and we had such a blast. good to know other members on this board were loving it as much as us.

I shot this at one of those Berkeley shows.

"All of you coachella 'regulars' have nasty boy pussies and itchy dick4's on your asses.
Why don't you all make like a tree and get chopped down and die. You all have been dreadfully mean to me.
I Hate you. All of you. None of you will ever get to see a womans chest meat or finger blast hott cougies like me.
Fuck you all. Consider this my resignation.

Very Bacharachian; I was expecting them to let it rock for the final single. But this was good.

Stipe interview with Salon. On the subject of a "farewell" show or shows:

I could not perform “Everybody Hurts” for the last time in London with 30,000 people in the room or 80,000 people on the field knowing full well it was the last time we were going to do it. I just couldn’t. I would collapse. It would be impossible – I wouldn’t be able to hit the notes. We all knew that would be a really hard thing to do. It’s just not very R.E.M. I hate to quote “The Simpsons” quoting us (laughs), but it would not be a very R.E.M. way to do that kind of thing. So we decided to do it our way. I’m really proud of the way that we did it.

Put on Around the Sun out of boredom and curiosity and Im kind of shocked at how much better it is than I remembered it, and I didn't exactly hate it.
I think it would fit a lot better now than it did on its release in 2004.
Not to say there aren't some clunkers on here, but its 3/4 a really good record.

"Leaving New York", "Wanderlust", "Aftermath", "Boy in the Well", "High Speed Train", "Worst Joke Ever", "Ascent of Man" are 7 great songs.
"Electron Blue" and "The Outsiders" are almost great.
The other ones leave me a bit meh tho, but thats 9 songs.
Enough for a good record buy omission.

I'd swap Reckoning for Up and replace either New Adventures or Pageant with Fables. That one might actually be my favorite.

8 albums in their first 9 years. Who does that today? and they were all pretty great. I'm glad I go to see them live a couple of times.

Yeah, I think so. I really love the murky production sound, the obtuse lyrics and the fact that some of the songs are unlike anything they'd ever do again. It's also got my favorite opener of any REM album and potentially my favorite single of theirs in Driver 8.

Try an album from each "era": Reckoning (early jangle pop era), Document (arena rock era), Automatic for the People (acoustic-ish, height of popularity era), New Adventures in Hi-Fi (mid-90s alt rock elder-statesmen era), and Accelerate (post-Bill Berry era).

That article was a fail from the headline. Part 1 starts with Lifes Rich Pageant? No. Part 1 needs to start with Chronic Town if not even earlier. No.

It's the fan's subjective journey through the band's history, though. If it were mine, it would probably start with "Man on the Moon," so be relieved.
In terms of R.E.M.’s chronology, Perfect Circle will be told slightly out of order. We’re starting in the late ’80s, because that’s when my story with R.E.M. starts. The early years, Chronic Town through Reckoning, will be covered in Part 2, and then I’ll jump back to the ’90s for the band’s arena-rock period. Things will follow a fairly straight path after that, though Fables Of The Reconstruction will have its own chapter toward the end. I promise it will all make sense once I’m finished, but if some of you are irritated by the structure or by what I’ve decided to focus (or not focus) on, I understand. You’re fans, too, and you have your own versions of this story. I promise my story won’t negate yours.

Part one should start pre-first Hib/Tone single. Probably when they meet Jefferson Holt.
