Default Best new bands since 2006

After chatting about music with a co-worker he asked me make a mix CD of "good new music." Apparently he spent some time in NYC's East Village music scene in the early 00s but hasn't been able to pay much attention to contemporary music recently due to law school/work. So what are some essential bands and their signature songs from the past 4 years? I've got a few in mind but admittedly do better with edm than rock. Thus far...

    Battles - Atlas
    Foals - Cassius/Two Steps Twice
Hercules and Love Affair - Blind
Handsome Furs - What We Had/Handsome Furs Hate This City
    No Age - Teen Creeps
    Vampire Weekend - A-Punk/Oxford Comma
    Bon Iver - Skinny Love

EDM suggestions are also appreciated. I'm planning on making one of each.

    Thanks.

I just looked at Pitchfork's Top 100 Songs of 2006 list. The Knife's Silent Shout is number 2. Number 1, My Love by Justin Timberlake.

Grizzly Bear - While You Wait For the Others, off the top of my head. Yes, they formed in '04 but didn't really make a name for themselves until '06.
    9/21 - Caetano Veloso - Hollywood Bowl
9/26 - William Basinski - Pasadena Arts Council
    9/28 - Bob Mould - Roxy (?)
    10/01 - King Crimson - Orpheum
    10/10 - Thurston Moore/Sebadoh - Echoplex (?)

Whoops, just noticed that you wanted their best songs instead of their best albums. Here's probably my favs for each:

    Antlers - Two
Wolf Parade - I'll Believe in Anything
Sunset Rubdown - Stadiums and SHrines II
The Drums - Down By the Water
Clap Your Hands Say Yeah - Skin of My Yellow Country Teeth
    Beach House - Zebra
Titus Andronicus - A More Perfect Union
Wild Beasts - The Fun Powder Plot
    Burial - Untrue
Fleet Foxes - White Winter Hymnal
Gaslamp Anthem - Here's Looking at You Kid
Smith Westerns - Be My Girl
    Frightened Rabbit - Modern Leper
    Fever Ray - Triangle Walks

Damn, those are some good songs... That'd make a dope mix album, your friend should be excited.

Crystal Castles - Intimate, Violent Dreams, Crimewave.

If he should ask if they play live, just lie. Best thing for him really.

    Battles - Atlas
Hercules and Love Affair - Blind

Battles was ok and now i realize they suck and i never understood why anyone likes that gay disco Blind song from Hercules and Love Affair.

    Personally i would say

    Mouse on the Keys

    Sleepy Sun

    Atoms For Peace
    XX
    Flying Lotus
    Fever Ray
    Le Butcherettes
    Nosaj Thing

Soulwax - Nite Versions ( i know they formed prior to this but it might as well be a new band considering their transformation)

The Tallest Man On Earth - Shallow Graves (or The Wild Hunt)
    Avi Buffalo - Avi Buffalo
    Jonsi - Go
    St. Vincent - Actor
    Friendly Fires - Friendly Fires
    The Dodos - Visiter
Cut Copy - In Ghost Colours

I wouldn't know where to start in terms of recommending new EDM from 2006 onward.

    9/12: Shifted @ Mercer
    9/24 - 28: Decibel Festival
    10/3-5: Hardly Strictly Bluegrass Festival
    10/4: Ought @ BoH
10/5: The War on Drugs, Cass McCombs @ The Fillmore
    10/18-19: Treasure Island Music Festival
