    Default The Poverty Thread

Wherein we discuss running into the same brick wall over and over again and not being able to do anything about it.

I'm basically going to abstain from shows until I can get caught up on bills and shit I need for day-to-day living. Which means missing Massive Attack, Deerhunter/Real Estate/Casino Vs. Japan, LCD/Hot Chip, Gary Numan, the Vaselines, and a ton of other shit. I'm hoping I can resume going to shows again by mid-November in time for Grinderman.

I just found out my car is going to cost 2 Grand to fix. On top of that, I currently have almost no money in my bank acount and huge credit card debt. I am also trying to save up for a place to live after I get married next summer as well as a honeymoon. I am fucked.

Yeah, I don't really like Jonsi, I was trying to make Patrick feel better by listing a show I'm missing.

I still don't have half of the financial aid I was supposed to be given 2 weeks ago. I don't have any of my school books and this is week 3 of classes and my kitchen has rice and mac n cheese. Kraft was on sale, I got the blue box blues...

I use to own a house and had money in the bank, now I live in a one bedroom apartment, make half the money I use to make and barely survive paycheck to paycheck... I can't even afford to put gas in my car half the time. Yet I am happier than I have ever been. That should not be the case, right?

We only have a 40" flat screen TV. We've had it for over 3 years now and can't afford a new 50". Crazy times we're living in.

No but here's a serious one. I was driving around on bald ass tires for several months, I seriously could not afford new ones. I was driving on a spare because one of them split. I finally got new ones. Pirelli's. First world problems indeed.

Yeah, I had the same problem with my tires, but I went to a llantera (sp?) shop and got refurbished tires for $120. Every day I drive to work I expect one to blow out. I love to gamble with my life.

I'm pretty sure we don't know what poverty really means. As that child above could attest, if she is still alive, which is doubtful.

Exactly! Yeah it sucks to not have money in your pocket, but if you have food on the table and a roof over your head you are better off than a lot of people in the world.

What's fucked up is that the photographer walked away leaving that child in that state.

On 27 July 1994 Carter drove to the Braamfontein Spruit river, near the Field and Study Centre, an area where he used to play as a child, and took his own life by taping one end of a hose to his pickup truck’s exhaust pipe and running the other end to the passenger-side window. He died of carbon monoxide poisoning at the age of 33. Portions of Carter's suicide note read:

"I am depressed ... without phone ... money for rent ... money for child support ... money for debts ... money!!! ... I am haunted by the vivid memories of killings and corpses and anger and pain ... of starving or wounded children, of trigger-happy madmen, often police, of killer executioners...I have gone to join Ken [recently deceased colleague Ken Oosterbroek] if I am that lucky."[7]

    ok then.

Do you get your coffee from Starbucks or some other overpriced shitty coffee shop? Do you brown bag your lunch ? Do you cook your own dinner(s) ? Do you have cable ? Do you drink bottled water ?

/\ huge opportunity for savings on the above items.

I don't drink coffee. Some times I drink tea from teabags at home. I buy lunch for a week and leave it in the fridge at work. I usually try to cook for myself, but with my limited time, cooking skills, and budget, it usually ends up being spaghetti for weeks at a time. I have a filtered water pitcher and refill the same bottle of water at work for a month at a time from the water fountain. So basically, yes, I conserve where I can. More or less, I mostly break even and often enough have enough extra for minor luxuries. The only thing is if anything unexpected happens in my life (I get sick, I need new contacts, I have to take my cat to the vet, etc.) I'm set back financially for a month or so. We've already determined this is just spoiled kid whinging. Still, the prospect of living hand to mouth for the next 40 years is rather bleak. I'd like to think I'm clever enough to escape that some day, but realistically . . . I make threads like this.
