First saw them 11/28/2008 at the Casbah and had been listening for some months prior, so I'm not too recent a fan, but that was Microcastle era. I started with Turn It Up though before moving on. Last.fm tells me I've listened to Microcastle the most, but Cryptograms is my favorite. Been hooked on HD lately of course, but you've made me realize I need to listen to some of their earlier stuff again/more often. Especially Fluorescent Grey, which I certainly do love, but for all it's goodness, I definitely have not spent enough time with it.

I'd rather listen to Rainwater Cassette Exchange than Flourescent Grey.

I don't understand this post at all.

I listened to Cryptograms once. I don't remember anything beyond that.

I could see you really growing to like Cryptograms, Tom. You'd probably also really enjoy the Flourescent Grey EP. They're noisier, more punk-y songs, but with the melodic edge that Deerhunter's increasingly focusing on.

Rainwater... is probably my favorite piece of work by Deerhunter. It might be my favorite ep by any band.

I always listen to Fluorescent Grey with Cryptograms because of the way the 2LP is laid out. I like it a lot that way. I've only listened to Rainwater Cassette twice. It never really clicked for me and any time I think about listening to it I choose Microcastle instead because I think that musical material is better represented on the album.

I hadn't paid FG much attention up until the past few months, but it's getting up there for me as well. The part on the song FG where the noise kicks in might be the greatest part of their entire discography.

My favorite thing in a Deerhunter song is the part in Octet where Josh first switches the bass line and puts in the little lick that's a signal for the song to really start to go wild. But yeah, the noise on Flourescent Grey is extraordinarily blissful.

I still havent pushed myself to listen to anything from before Cryptograms, and even that hasn't sunk in for me. I skipped over Rainwater too, hopefully some day I'll go and spend some time with both and the rest of their old discography.
    Upcoming Shows:
    * Dillon Francis + Anamanaguchi -- December 28th

Going to Weekend 1 of Coachella 2014

Don't bother with the only real release pre-Cryptograms. It's not great (although Adorno's a cool enough song). I need to buy Rainwater Cassette Exchange though, so I can really give it a serious listen. It's one of two releases by them I'm not super familiar with (the other being the aforementioned album, Turn It Up ******.)

Enjoyed the live jam bit for Memory Boy tonight on Letterman. What was with the guitarist humping the floor though? Interesting.

Turn It Up... isn't their best, but I really like it. It's the band still trying to find their sound, and I find a good bit of it to be really rewarding.

And yeah, awesome performance on Letterman tonight but wtf are they a 6-piece now? Those other two guys are douchebags, trying waaaay too much to look like rockstars.

Naw, one of those guys was Cole from the Black Lips, and according to Stereogum the other dude is Adam Bruneau from the Back Pockets. Killer jam at the end, and I think Letterman actually liked it.

I either didn't know or forgot that Marc Riley has his own show. I need to listen to this regularly. The Magazine cover was pretty nice too.

Considering that they didn't even sell out the Fonda the last time they played Los Angeles, isn't the Wiltern a pretty big step up for them? I'm guessing this wont come very close to selling out.

With the date scheduled the way it is, I wouldn't be overly shocked if they surprised us by releasing a new album or EP prior to the show (or tour, if it's a tour).
