Default Elevation for Outdoor Theatre Please

A gradual incline would make all the difference for the outdoor theater.
Stadiums do it every year for motocross and auto rallies. They lay down blankets and boards to protect their pristine grass fields before piling dirt on top.

    -->

The pitch wouldn’t be steep at all. A rise of 20 feet over the course of a couple hundred yards would create a pleasant amphitheater environment. The back of the mound would drop off in a safe rounded pitch from its 20 foot peak in a 90 degree semi-circle stretching from the Gobi Food Court over to the Doolab and then across to the Beer Gardens. It would also provide a fantastic view back towards the rest of the festival.

The temporary elevation would be covered in Synthetic Turf, similar to ant-hills featured on playgrounds.

    And there you go.

that right there, is what's known as a fucking great idea. it would also probably help reduce acoustic bleed.

I would love the crap out of this.
I would also like it to be of a steep enough angle for some really fun tunneling.

GV was promised "improvements" as part of the terms of the lease... This would certainly be a better investment than palm trees and hedges.

Do not like. One of favorite things to see is the vast, flat, green, grass when entering the polo field. Not to mention that synthetic grass blows. Coachella has excellent grass, why cover it with fake stuff?

A minor sacrifice for what will end up being better sound AND a better view for more attendees. This is a great idea.

It would be cool if they (GV) could create a bit of a natural amphitheater at the outdoor stage. I just think the cost and logistics of it all (added on top of what they already have to do) would be too much.

So wait you want that highlighted area risen somewhere in the middle?

While I think that'd be pretty cool. We might have to worry about cripples getting their wheelchairs stolen/rented to ride down the sides. I'm tell you right now, I'd be really tempted. A $5 bill would tempt the most crippled cripple, I think.

I'd also use the hill to roll down, instead of walk. Also there's usually ice somewhere on the polo field. What's to stop someone from slicking a side? Sounds awesome to me.

Unless they really packed the dirt down, I would expect the traffic of tens of thousands of people leaving the hill very lumpy by Saturday night. Also, synthetic turf gets pretty hot when it's in the desert sun all day and would actually ignite if a cigarette were dropped onto it.

I am kind of intrigued by this, though

This sounds like one of those great sounding things on paper and actually makes total sense to do. However it sounds like in a real life situation it has everything to go wrong with it.

Would the mound still be there for Stagecoach? The location of the Outdoor became the one for the Mane Stage for 2010. i suspect they'll do that again for 2011. The mound would mess with the whole concept of that so removing it before the country fans come in would more than likely have to happen. Interesting idea though.

I was there and it wasn't in place of the outdoor stage. It was a bit over to the right of where the main stage was at Coachella.

Point out something that has nothing to do with this. But I know for a fact that Home Depot Center actually rips out the grass when Motor Cross and X-Games come through. My dad is a Galaxy season ticket holder so I go to a lot of the games and its always brand new grass that they play on after such events. Cant vouch for other stadiums though.

It was hard enough getting around the outdoor theater this year. Now you want to add a hill obstacle to get around, not to mention completely blocking the view of anyone who gets stuck behind the hill.

I kinda think there's already subtle incline at that stage. I tend to not have to raise my camcorder in the air as high as at other stages when I'm shooting acts on the outdoor theater

They WOULD really pack the dirt down.

Ice cubes. Packed in with the dirt.

Yes, they would keep the mound, but haul off the turf to make a more authentic mane stage.

You bringing up the HDC is the only instance I know of 'ripping out grass'. Even so, HDC DOES keep the grass for concerts, which can be just as burdensome. Anecdotally, I know Qualcomm and Anaheim stadiums do keep grass under the dirt.

Do not dodge, evade, or circumvent the elevation; Conquer it.

In fact, you bring up another benefit. Albeit negligible, a mound has more surface area than a plane, which means more space!

If the hill is blocking your view of the Outdoor, that means you are at a different stage.
