Anyone who thinks Pink Floyd, Led Zepplin and Tool are generic alternative bands is fucking clueless.

Did I say generic alternative? No. I said alternatively generic. Which is to say, Pink Floyd, Led Zepplin, and Tool topping a 100 list would also be unsurprising, standard, and generic. You know, like as an alternative to The Beatles and The Beach Boys.

The Beatles and The Beach Boys top everyone's top ten's (at least VH1's and Rolling Stones).

In Mr. Fuzz's linguistic system, the noun "everyone" is synonymous with the number 3.

My band is in the process of trying to convince ourselves to cover "Babooshka." Kate Bush rules.

What makes Revolver better than, say Remain in Light? Where it falls on a timeline?

Basically, yes. They got lucky in being there first and were skilled enough to take advantage of that. Not saying I like Revolver more than Remain in Light, just answering your question.

Every list is going to have The Beatles at the top, and that can't be held against CoS or VH1 or Rolling Stone, it's music journalism itself that refuses to man up. The Beatles were one of the best bands ever, maybe the best, but that doesn't automatically mean they wrote the best album ever. Case in point - The Beatles are at the top of every list, but it's not always the same album. How is that possible? Clearly you just have to put the Beatles at the top or else you look silly. Is there even an all-time list without them at the top?

Did I say generic alternative? No. I said alternatively generic. Which is to say, Pink Floyd, Led Zepplin, and Tool topping a 100 list would also be unsurprising, standard, and generic. You know, like as an alternative to The Beatles and The Beach Boys.
Re: this, Guedita show me a top 100 album list with Tool anywhere on it. I've never seen it. Let alone "topping" the list as you say. I think Lateralus should be in the top 40 at least, but I don't think most publications agree with me. So there'd be nothing standard about that pick.
    Ron Paul 2012!

    Upcoming Shows:
    Four Tet
    Coachella 4/20-4/22
Death Cab for Cutie/Magik Magik Orchestra

Guess what, Lateralus ranks somewhere towards the top in my brother's top 100 album list. And probably a bunch of other people who take the time to compile their own lists. I'm not going to do a fucking field survey to quell your misdirected emotional response to a handful of shitty music websites that have spat out lists omitting your favorite artists. I mean, you realize a list as broad as "best albums ever" is inherently absurd and insanely subjective, right? Like, a lot of people really love The Beatles, right? And a lot of people also really love Tool, right?

Being the first to produce an awesome type of music isn't "lucky".

And Revolver is a more diverse and consistent album than Remain In Light, hence why it's better. Its inception date isn't the reason.

edit: and it's not as if Remain In Light coming out 15 years later puts it in any form of disadvantage in today's rankings. The only albums that are at disadvantages simply because of their release dates in these forms of lists are albums that have come out since 1995ish.

Remain in Light is the better album between it and Revolver, in my mind. There's so much more ambiguity, tension, build and lack of ego. It's an absolutely astounding release, and while Revolver is likewise incredible for what it did and still does, I don't think it reaches the heights.

    S'right.

Remain In Light is definitely in my top thirty of all time, as it's my favorite album from one of my favorite bands ever. It's just not as good to me as Revolver, White Album, Sgt. Pepper, or Abbey Road. In my eyes, there's the Beatles, Bowie, and then there's everyone else.

I dunno, I've had years and years of thinking in the canonized fashion, and then I realized that lots of the stuff I'm listening to is going to be in someone's canon in about 20 years. All this music is just as validly good, and it's fair to compare Wu Tang and The Beatles and Sonny Rollins, because all were innovators and made some killer music. My best argument for Remain in Light over Revolver is that, ultimately, I'd rather listen to it. Revolver has held the number 3 position for Beatles albums for me for a long time, but that means that there are quite a few albums I like before it.

I agree with Bryan. Although I've never been a Revolver fanatic in the first place. I like it a lot but it wouldn't make a personal top 100. Then again, it's been ages since I've listened to it.

Remain In Light and Revolver are both so good that I think when you get to the point that you are trying to logically justify why you like one of the other, you are overthinking it, and missing the point of what music is really all about anyway. Rankings are ultimately stupid and just an excuse for people to argue. At least we can all agree that Revolver is the best Beatles album and The Beach Boys are fucking awesome.
