Fresh off his "JUICY AUSTRALIA TOUR"
Ok, so this BRICK pizza/italian place is about to open or has just opened downtown (they're restarting Cheap Thrillz there--yay!). Look at this effing menu:
http://www.brickphx.com/html/menu.html
Grilled Cheese with Fried Green Tomatoes and Pork Belly?
Short rib, sweet potato, and banana pepper pizza?
White spinach pizza with bacon, mozz, and garlic feta sauce?
Hand cut pasta?
BANANA CHURROS with chocolate?
I'm totally in.
I smell a First Friday or Cheap Thrillz meetup extremely soon.
Don't know why I haven't participated in this thread yet, but now is as good a time as any...
I agree with several choices so far, so forgive the redundancy.
Best Mexican restaurant in the state for me so far is "Mi Nidito" in Tuscon. I don't pass through without stopping there.
Best Mexican in the valley for me, the original Los Olivos in Oldtown Scottsdale. Been there with loads of people and everyone always seems pleased with what they get, and I can't get enough of their Carne Asada. The one in N. Scottsdale is good, but something just isn't quite the same, besides the modern furnishings.
Best Pizza is definitely Pizza Bianco. Its almost not fair to consider it a Pizza place, it is gourmet eating, such fresh ingredients. Hate that they don't take reservations and its always a two hour wait, but their Bar next door is a good place to hang if you can get a seat. The Cafe Bianco (only open for lunch, and located further north in Central PHX) makes some awesome sandwiches on the freshest bread.
Best NY Pizza is definitely Ray's, and this is coming from someone who grew up in NJ and loves his Pizza. I spent 8 years in Atlanta and couldn't find anything I'd consider better than mediocre, and Phoenix has several places that are worthy. NYPD Pizza rates pretty well too. Patsy Grimaldi's makes some good Brick Oven pizzas.
Best Pizzeria Italian Food is Redendo's (in Fountain Hills and Scottsdale). Their food overall is as good as any Italian restaurant, their Pizza is really good, but their pastas and sandwiches (hot and cold) are awesome.
Best Chinese food I've had is from Jade Palace in Scottsdale on Shea (they have some other locations I can't vouch for), but again, NY/NJ people take their chinese food seriously, and friends from back east agree that this is as close as they've had outside the metro NY area.
Some other recommended restaurants for me are Earl's Tin Roof and Village Pub Tavern, both in Scottsdale.
Blue Coyote Grill (at talking stick casino)
While the Wandering horse Buffet was over priced and mediocre at best, the Blue Coyote Grill downstairs is a gem! I first went there about 2 months ago for breakfast and it was so good I have been back 6 or 7 times since then. Simple classic breakfast dishes, nothing to fancy. The quality though is top notch. The "2 eggs your way" breakfast is my personal favorite. Scrambled eggs with cheese, bacon and some DELICOUS crispy hash browns. Add a mimosa and a coffee and you have one of the best breakfast dishes ive ever had. I don’t know what they do back in the kitchen... maybe they cook everything in butter, maybe they have the baby Jesus back there blessing each dish as it leaves the grill. Who knows? All I know is it is quite fantastic. The service is also very good. Highly recommended!!!

BISCUITS!
4623 E Elliott Rd
Phoenix, AZ 85044
(480) 209-1850
this place is new, within the past month or so. dustin & i discovered this after we found that los taquitos wasn't open one night (killer breafast burritos) a bit west on the corner of elliott and 48th street. so we went back in the morning and it is AWESOME. they serve traditional breakfast food with all sorts of biscuit concoctions. the biscuits are amazing. they will thank you about 80 million times because they want to stay in business. they also serve lunch, but close at 3pm. they have signs about some sort of fish fry on friday & saturdays or something.
don't listen to the comments on yelp. i have been several times now and we have always had friendly service, the entrance may be in a weird spot but christ, it's not like you have to do a rock climb to get in or something and the biscuits are stellar. they were not thin at all. the only complaint dustin had was that the hollendaise (sp?) sauce was a bit lemony. the bacon is excellent though, the country ham was good too. i also liked the bite i had of his SOS biscuit concoction. i want to go back after typing all this lol.

We went to Matt's Big Breakfast after we got home from the Arcade Fire show on Saturday. Totally worth the 30 min wait.
Rick and Taylor got pancakes. I got the special--scrambled eggs with hatch green chilies, jack cheese, and pork tenderloin, served with tortillas. It was soooo good.
I went this weekend, and it definitely lived up to the hype. I got the Nortena Torta which had grilled steak, avacado, melted cheese, chipolte sauce and tomato. It was amazing. I also had some of a shrimp taco which was delicious and only cost a dollar. Both their red and green salsa's were good which is a big factor for me (you're only as good as your salsa, imo).
Highly recommended.
Also, you can never go wrong with a glass bottle of Coca-cola!
mmmmm....real cane sugar.
and i agree. a mexican food joint is only as good as their salsa.

My friend and I went to a Mexican restaurant a while back and he asked for a taste of their salsa before he would sit down and eat. They gave him one of those small paper cups full of salsa and he swallowed the cup like a shot of tequila. He then looked at me and said, "Oh yeah, we can eat here." It was a taqueria near 43rd Ave and Glendale, but I forget the name.

yeah, some places taste like ketchup with chili flakes in it. yuck. i also like places that have a "HOT" salsa that also has flavor and doesn't just burn to burn.
which is why i LOVE los dos molinos.

Anyone recommend some good brunch spots?
Fresh off his "JUICY AUSTRALIA TOUR"
Has anyone had food from that two hippies and a shack place... I have heard good things and they even made the top 25 taco places in the valley. There is one on Dunlap and 7th street and one downtown somewhere as well. Just curious.
I had a good brunch at one of the hilton restaraunts, I just can't remember which one. I want to say either the point tapatio or the point at south mountain, it was many years ago though.
I keep wanting to try this place called Scramble on 7th Street and like Mountain Veiw, I heard they have great breakfasts. Has anyone tried it?
I can officially recommend Padre's in Phoenix. Had the Pollo Relleno. It was quite tasty. Also tried the salmon enchiladas, and it was just as good, if not better.

There's quite a few Two Hippie's locations and each have a different menu. 7th St and Camelback is a taco location. I've had cactus, ground beef, carne asada and chicken tacos. While they consist of several ingredients, they're pretty basic and don't have all that much flavor to be honest. I have to douse mine in hot sauce to make up for the lack of seasoning.
On the bright side, all the ingredients are fresh, the food's relatively healthy and it's cheap. One $2 taco is all I need for lunch, they're pretty big, or you can get 3 for $5.
There's also a Two Hippie's Magic Mushroom burger place on 7th St and Indian School and a Two Hippie's Pizza Shop on 7th Ave and Maryland.
Several of my friends have eaten at Scramble and none of them have said anything bad about it. I think most breakfast places are good, it's hard to screw up breakfast, imo.
