KTRU is the student-run radio station at Rice University in Houston. I worked there (volunteer) from 1980 to 1983 with a weekly 3-hour time slot. The station is completely independent and completely student-run. It is quirky, amateur, weird, and at its worse, kind of dumb. But it is also a hell of a lot of fun and a real breath of fresh air in a media world dominated by Clear Channel and, on the public side, by NPR.
Now the Rice University administration is selling the station to the University of Houston, who will make it an all-classical format, so they can run NPR 24/7 on their existing station.

I don't expect any of you to give two shits about these particulars, but the idea of losing an independent student-run station to the middle-aged geezers with big ugly sweaters who think Terry Gross is interesting might interest a few of you.

and for those of you who believe in such things, there is even a petition you can sign.
