Thread: Android Phones

nice write up! I'm a huge fan of my S4. I didn't think it was much of an upgrade from my S3 but now that I've had for a while I can definitely tell how much better it is. I just wish my TV was a year newer so that I could take advantage of the wireless screen casting.

Does the S4 have a successful root method? I made the mistake of letting verizon give me a Razr HD Maxx as a warranty replacement when my other phone broke, and later when I find out that I can't stream music over wifi (to an apple airport express) without root access, I realize this Motorola are root nazis and make it extremely difficult if even possible.

I've heard Samsung may be a little more hacker friendly but don't want to move to an S4 before hearing how easy (or impossible) it is to root.

I am canceling Verizon the moment my contract runs out on December 21 and switching to Virgin Mobile for their no-contract $35/month plan and getting my very first smart phone, which i am excited about. I got an LG Optimus F3 for $89.99, and it gets good reviews on many fronts except that has a very small, tiny hard drive. I'm sure i'll want to upgrade o something fancier once I've gotten the hang of things.

yeah, root is pretty easy (for now) but I think the bootloader is still locked on verizon.

I'm probably going to get it. I decided to hold off on the S4 for the S5. I might still do the S4 depending on how much they drop price of it and the price of the S5 because I'm not a power user of phones but my Evo is finally starting to show signs of it dying after all these years I've had it. My Evo has been great though and I've only had to get a new battery once and just recently switched to the extended battery I got for it for travel. But yeah I'm excited for the S5.

So fuck. I don't know where else to post this but I just dropped my Evo and now the screen is just black. I can tell the phone is still on because I see the green notification light blinking. Is there anyway to fix this that any one knows of that will allow me to hold out until the S5 is out?

Sounds like a cracked LCD screen. Unless you replace the screen, you're likely boned.

you could try yanking the battery to give it good hard reset, but like RHSP said, it's probably toast. if it's just the backlight you might still be able to use it for calls, though.

Yeah, one of my friends busted his iPhone up pretty bad and he was able to make phone calls using some headphones that had a mic and a button that activated the voice command on the phone. Not sure if that would work on an Evo but you never know.

You could always go on eBay or Craigslist and find a burner phone to use until the S5 comes out too.

I still get phone calls that I know how to answer so that makes it sill usable in the sense. I just cant see anything on the screen. There is no visible crack or anything on it where I can see and say "oh that shit is fucked up". Like I said I can still answer calls which is the most important thing right now as I am expecting some important phone calls. Just sucks this happened now as I was waiting for the S5 to come out to get a new phone.

Got back from the Sprint Store and yeah it's not fixable. Well it is but for more of the cost then it would be to just to upgrade and get a new phone. I am pretty sure I am going to end up getting the LG G2. Does anyone have it and just thoughts on it? The reviews I have read so far all seem to be pretty good. It's cheaper to activate a new line with a new number so I am going to do that but I since I am under my parents family plan I have to wait for my dad to do that and he is currently out of town.

Also for those curious I did find out that the S5 is coming out mid to late April sometime and that the starting price on Sprint at least is going to be 299 plus tax. That is more then I want to pay so that is why I am going with the G2 instead.

I am not sure if this is an issue specific to my LG Optimus F3, or it's an Android thing, but I figured asking here would be worth a shot because this is really annoying to me. Does anybody know if there is a way to switch what app is the default app for playing music files? When i clicked on files it would ask me if I wanted to make an app be the one that always opens those types of files and I clicked yes at some point, and have since realized that i much prefer to use a different app and I can't figure out how to switch it now.

How it has worked on my Android phones (none of them an LG): Go to Applications Manager. Find the app that is now the default (note that the apps may be in different columns, Downloaded, SD Card, Stock, All) and select it. Scroll down and you are able to clear defaults. Then you can set your new favorite next time around.

THANK you!!! I had to do it a little differently by going through system settings, but it was basically the same steps.

Why do I hate capitalism? Because of Samsung's Calendar app. And Verizon's ISIS (or whatever they're calling it now (which turns out to be Softcard)).

Capitalism does not mean that the best stuff will be offered to us, it means that each and every hateful company is going to be fiercely competing for more of our money, even if that means hamstringing their own products. And when they aren't blocked by vindictiveness they are blocked by patents and other forms of exclusivity.

My Galaxy S4 came with a built-in Calendar. Unlike most apps I cannot delete or disable this Calendar. If you turn off notifications it turns them back on after a while. If you tell this app to not sync with your online calendars then it makes your Google Calendar app also not sync with those calendars. So if you use the Google Calendar App (and why would you not) you are stuck with double notifications (except for the short periods of time when you it accepts that you turned off the notifications on the Samsung app). You could give in to their treachery and just use the Samsung app but then you have to fight with it get it to use your Google Calendar calendars.

The worst thing might be that I don't even understand what Samsung gains by fucking us like this; it seems to be entirely out of spite.

Verizon disabled Google Wallet (until just recently) on any phones on their network because they wanted people to use their phone payment system. Google Wallet showed up more than two years earlier (September 2011 versus November 2013) but Verizon still didn't let their customers use it because we are creatures of habit and there's nothing special about Softcard. Or Google Wallet, for that matter. I stopped paying attention so I missed exactly how Verizon came to give up, whether it had more to do with Google engineering a way around Verizon's block, lawsuits or Verizon giving up due to Apple Pay concerns.

Do you or did you ever actually use Google Wallet and or ISIS?
The only anecdotal news I've ever heard about those is they were pointless since you couldn't use them anywhere.

Google Wallet is essentially now defunct, I don't think ISIS is really doing anything sneaky, they just are trying to fill the niche (that doesn't really exist).

iPay is interesting because they appear to have support from the financial institutions, but so far no major retailers are bought in yet. They brag about Starbucks and Target in the press release but it seems for Starbucks iPay can only be used to load gift cards, and the I think Target is only limited as well. Most retailers are dead set against Apple or Google being another middleman. Some major retailers need to cave and that doesn't seem close to happening.

I have not actually used Google Wallet as a tap and pay yet but I am now set up and able to use it; it is not defunct. And speaking of in-store purchases Google Wallet works at the same fucking retailers as Apple Pay (with the possible exception of the Apple store); they use the same terminals. The Duane Reade across the street from my old apartment in Manhattan has had that terminal for years, but because Verizon blocked Google Wallet I was never able to use it there. There are now Walgreenses near me where I will be able to use it. And it makes sense that I'll be able to use it more as there are more and more mobile payment-enabled users once Apple Pay rolls out. 220,000 locations seems like a lot but it's a big country and I'm not going to eat at McDonald's.

Also from what I've heard retailers aren't paying more for payments through Apple Pay, that Apple is taking their cut from elsewhere but I don't know the details.

The Wikipedia blurb does seem to suggest that Apple Pay will be able to be used in Starbucks or Target stores but the actual Apple Pay website says that Apple Pay can be used with those apps. And, incidentally that's exactly what I was talking about, Starbucks and Target want everything to go through their thing, who cares about making things easy on the customer.

In the interest of full disclosure I'll note that my wife works for one of the companies that does payment processing for Apple Pay.

Today Apple claims it has no intention of interceding in transactions, but tomorrow is what retailers are worried about. If there's a full paradigm shift and phones become the primary way everyone makes transactions then Apple and Google will absolutely be taking a cut of the transactions. Domino's Pizza and McDonalds, etc. aren't going to effect a paradigm shift, it's WalMart, Macy's, Gap, etc. that need to agree that this is going to be a real thing.

Macy's is in already, but yes, there need to be a lot more than 220,000 locations before this will really matter. I want to use GW at Walgreens just because of the novelty; I'll still need to bring cash/credit card to pay at other stores I stop at.

Possibly more useful right now are those apps - Starbucks, Target, Groupon, Uber, whatnot. You no longer have to give (or type in) your credit card information to these apps, you just use Apple Pay. If you're going to be buying things with your phone it'd be nice to not have to type in everything each time. And when you get a new credit card update it in one place rather than in a dozen different apps.

I know I've bought a few new levels/upgrades/premium versions of apps on my Android phone through Google Wallet. How has in-app purchases worked for iPhones? I know I'd be more likely to just stick with the basic version of Carcassonne if I had to deal directly with Exocet.

Major US retailers are only just now beginning to rollout EVM payment systems. I don't think mobile payments will the standard for a long time. Google and Apple brag about the "on board" retailers but the reality is they're often not fully capable at those places. It'll be another couple years before most people have NFC capable phones anyway.
