    Default The Cars

In my opinion when an artist says he "can't say" it means they are contractually obligated not to say anything.

    http://consequenceofsound.net/2010/0...ars-reuniting/

Sometimes we on the Internet jump to conclusions when it comes to big news. Heck, Chuck Biscuits ended up dead for a day before we all collectively came to our senses. But if we ever hoped that we weren’t overreacting, it’s probably now, as, according to SlicingUpEyeballs, a recent photo of The Cars posted on the band’s Facebook page has them back in the studio working on… something. Hey, that’s not nothing!

The photo, posted July 13th, shows frontman Ric Ocasek with guitar in hand in front of a laptop, Elliot Easton strumming along on guitar, the perpetually retired David Robinson back behind the kit, and keyboardist Greg Hawkes playing bass, taking over for Benjamin Orr, who died of pancreatic cancer in 2000. And while the pic should be definitive proof that this is their first time recording material since 1987’s Door to Door, Hawkes told the Boston Globe recently that he can’t confirm whether they’re recording Cars material, songs for an Ocasek solo album, or “just fooling around.” He did cryptically add, “I hate to be vague, but I really can’t say. It’s a crazy world.” And if all that weren’t frustrating enough, the band posted yet another pic on July 22nd of a mysterious man in the studio. Cut the mysterious act, gang!

This seems to be the closest fans have gotten to a reunion, unless you count 2005’s The New Cars, which featured Easton and Hawkes touring with Todd Rundgren doing old Cars songs. Either way, enjoy both pics below. As always, stay tuned for more reunion news as it’s announced (or posted).

As long as Ocasek's voice is still solid, I fully support them performing in 2011.

I feel pretty confident in saying that all of us 30 or 40 somethings would love to have The Cars in 2011. They are one of those bands that everybody knows more songs of theirs than they realize. Massive appeal too. If that is their first show back, it will be a huge draw.

Yeah their catalogue is pretty chock-full of great hit songs. Would they be a big enough draw to subheadline at Coachella? Or are they a 3rd line band?

A close friend of mine saw The Cars in concert in Cincinnati, Ohio at some outdoor music festival with Fleetwood Mac headlining. She said they sucked in concert, but that was a long time ago. Still, I'm a big Cars fan myself and I would love to see them at Coachella.

They're big enough to subheadline. No one could be disappointed with that.

"Blue Tip" preview. The Cars will do just fine for filling my annual post punk/new wave nostalgia trip at Coachella, hopefully matching or exceeding the highs of PiL and Devo last year.

Yes, being an old timer I caught them in their early 80s heyday, and then they did have a bad live reputation for two reasons...playing short hour long at most sets, and a spontaneity factor of zero...they show'd up, play'd their songs exactly as recorded, and left, rarely even establishing eye contact with the audience.

But they sounded great, and given how much the art of live audience interaction has declined over the years, I don't think today they would come off as any less interactive than say a Grizzly Bear, Radiohead, or XX...other bands who do virtually nothing to pump up the crowd other than play their excellent music.

I think it'd be a fun set, and given how well the old timers (sans Sly) have shown at Coachella the last three years...I'm all for it.

This could quite possibly be the most epic Coachella set ever. One of the most enduring back catalogs, these songs are timeless. Elliot Easton is probably the most under-rated guitar players. And most of the kids in the crowd have never had a chance to see them live. "Feels Like The First Time" indeed.

Elliot may have to be more of a guitar hero for these shows with orr gone and Ocasek probably doing all lead vocals.

I can't say it would be "fun", since the Cars were never a great live band, but in many ways it would be another legendary reunion that GV can lay claim to. And I'd be there.

I saw The Cars in 1983 and I don't remember them being bad live. I DO remember every time the croud tried to sit down, The Cars would play another song everyone knew and loved and jumped back to the feet.
