Also, unrelatedly, how would one go about analyzing health insurance industry data to determine the lifetime cost of health expenses related to obesity incurred by the end-consumer, if one wanted to calculate an ROI on weight loss?

i dont understand how this is anything new. Most doctors will already give you a highly discounted rate if you don't go through insurance. Problem is it's still more than what you would pay if you had insurance. Granted that doesnt take into account the cost you are paying for the insurance itself, but him slashing his prices in half doesnt really mean much since half off is still more than what most low income people can afford. Obviously I'm generalizing, but if you can afford to pay "half price", you can also probably afford a cheap hmo plan.

exactly. they jack up their rates in the first place before they bill the insurance, so half off of an already inflated rate doesnt mean much...
