I honestly think that making yourself a little too available to NME can mean the early death of a very promising career. I don't know how many British - or rather, English - acts have been the toast of that magazine's pages only to collapse under the inevitable backlash when folks start to resent being forcefed The Next Big Thing for a few too many weeks.
Mumford and Sons were fantastic at Sasquatch earlier this year. I loved them from the first time I heard them, which was during my Sasquatch research actually. I showed a couple songs to my fiancee, and she didn't care for them. Then we saw them at Sasquatch and they blew us away. She now loves them too. They played at 2:30 on the second stage and, next to The xx, it was the biggest crowd I saw at the second stage the whole weekend. Furthermore, the audience was nuts. Everyone was so into it. Jumping, dancing, singing and everything. I have been a huge fan ever since then and I am not going to let the hype ruin them for me.

Also, my buddy moved to London a few years ago and lived there for a year... and when he got back, his biggest complaint and living in London was always having to deal with NME. His exact complaint is what you pointed out, they put bands on an incredibly high pedestal, then let them drop back into obscurity without notice, which results in the break up of the band.

Hadn't heard this song in a few months and has been killing me ever since it popped up on shuffle two weeks back.

Agreed. On track 8 of Midnight at the Movies, uhhhhhh . . . "Poor Fool" (hooray shoddy memory!), his voice sounds impossibly old and expansive. Dude is all elbows and angles but has the voice of a man twice his size.

And he's a doing a winter tour. Yes.

Keeping my fingers crossed for some west coast dates.

The Jayhawks are set to play five major cities in January, 2011. The bandís lineup for these dates will comprise Mark Olson, Gary Louris, Marc Perlman, Karen Grotberg and Tim OíReagan.

The tour dates will celebrate the January 18, 2011 reissue of the bandís first two classic albums for American Recordings - Hollywood Town Hall (1992) and Tomorrow The Green Grass (1995) - now expanded with a wealth of rare bonus tracks.

In New York and Chicago the Jayhawks are playing two nights; the first night the band will play Hollywood Town Hall in its entirety, the second night will be devoted to Tomorrow The Green Grass. Additional fan favorites will be played each night.

    Here's the dates:
    1/18 Toronto
1/20 New York (Hollywood Town Hall)
1/21 New York (Tomorrow The Green Grass)
    1/22 Philadelphia
1/ 27 Chicago (Hollywood Town Hall)
1/ 28 Chicago (Tomorrow The Green Grass)
    1/ 29 Minneapolis

Is this the first time Olson has been back as an 'official' member of the Jayhawks since he left them in the mid-90s?

those two albums are so damned good. Would love to catch one of these shows.

So my band played a fundraiser for a local radio station last night and it was an Uncle Tupelo tribute night. Eight bands played 3-6 songs each. It was good times.

Here is a conversation that happened last night between some dudes and Renato, our drummer:

Dude1: "You played those songs better than the original drummer."
Renato: "Cool, thanks man." (Dude1 walks away)
Dude2: "That was the original drummer. Mike Heidorn."

Also, I am seriously in the doghouse right now, owing to how I threw up when I got home from the show last night. But, really, how could I help myself? Jay Farrar sent the venue a bottle of Jack Daniels with a note that read "For those that like to drink, Jay"

Well if there's a Live Aid 2011, be sure to have your charismatic lead singer jump off the stage into the crowd. Works every time.

Has anyone else spent any time with this record? I'm having a hard time not playing it. Not strictly alt. country, not totally spooky Southern rock, but entirely enjoyable.

It's just a vibe, I guess. Or I suppose it's southern rock with some more "atmospheric" qualities, a la My Morning Jacket (who actually serve as Bare's backing band on this album). Rehearsed and recorded in under a week, it's got a live feel but is still polished. I'll find youtubes.

EDIT: I can only find live clips. Just picture MMJ backing him up and you'll get the idea.

This Jamey Johnson record is seriously good. You people interested in this thread should steal a copy and listen to the first few songs and see if you agree. "Cover Your Eyes" is amazing. Think David Allen Coe or early Steve Earle.

    I need to correct this.

The first disc, the "Black Album", is very very good. If that were all there were, this would be on my top 10 yearend list.

The second disc, though, the "White Album" is much more uneven. Some of it is pretty good, some of it is not. Some of it is so cheesy and schmaltzy I was embarrassed by it.

Take this under advisement and proceed accordingly.

Hey, Tom, I just listened to an entire Jamey Johnson record yesterday with my dad. I'm not sure which one. He loves the guy. And, I thought it sounded pretty good too. I actually thought about mentioning him in this thread. But, I see, you already did

So there's a guy in town putting out a compilation of St Louis bands and offered to record the songs on the compilation for free. This is a song we probably wouldn't have otherwise recorded. It is easily the most country song we have (bringing a pedal steel player in for this recording only helps to reinforce that fact). We were not as involved in the mixing as I would have liked and were not involved in the mastering. As a result, it doesn't quite have the final sparkle that I would have liked. We were super involved in the whole process of the EP, and this experience just shows me that our heavy involvement is important.

That all being said, this is a really fun song to play. I am glad we had a chance to record it.

Edit: This is the song we recorded in the video I posted earlier.
