I like the looks of part 2 of your mix quite a bit Tom.

I can sleep in till noon anytime I want
Though there's not many days that I do
Gotta get up and take on that world
When your an adult it's no cliche it's the truth
There's going to be an array of animated alt-country artists on adult swim tonight!
For the uninitiated, Squidbillies is an animated television series about the Cuylers. The main character Early Cuyler is trying to take care of his impoverished family that consists of his son Rusty, his sister Lil and his Granny in the Appalachian region of North Georgia. Also, they all happen to be talking, anthropomorphic redneck squids who butt heads against the local establishment, like the Sheriff and Dan Halen. This Adult Swim animation features the voices of Unknown Hinson, Dana Snyder and creator Dave Willis.
On Sunday, July 18th at midnight, America’s fourth-favorite-animated-family, Squidbillies, premieres a special 30-minute all-star musical, "America: Why I Love Her" on Adult Swim. For this 5th season finale, creators Dave Willis and Jim Fortier pulled out their rolodex to reel in some of America’s bona-fide musical talents spanning bluegrass, southern rock, and country-ish / Americana. You’ll hear music from Lucinda Williams, Drive-By Truckers, Bonnie "Prince" Billy, Jackyl, Todd Snider, Gillian Welch, David Rawlings, Rhett Miller, Jimmie Dale Gilmore, Hayes Carll, and Split Lip Rayfield. Now that's a heap of good listenin'!
That looks phenomenal. I will be watching.
We played a show with a band called Futurebirds last night. They are from Athens, GA. They were seriously badass. Like a loud, muscular Fleet Foxes... which may lead you to think of My Morning Jacket, which is not a totally inappropriate reference point.

So yeah I made a mix that is alt-coutry-ish. It's longer than a CD, but I don't give a fuuuuck. This mix is basically a summary of what I like in alt country. I also tried to avoid songs on Tom's mixes.
Word.

I'm going to see the Old 97s in SF tomorrow. They're playing a free show at Justin Herman Plaza for that Texas On Tour thing.
What time is the show, fiyahhh? I'd like to see that.
I'm taking my Dad to see The Judds at the Oracle Arena for Christmas...and I'm really excited.
5/25-5/27: MOVEMENT DETROIT
6/6: The Field @ The Independent
6/26: Colin Stetson @ The Chapel
Wow...Slobberbone. Haven't really thought about them in a while, even though they did play in Dallas recently (couldn't go). I saw them open for Old 97s back in the late 90s.
My band created a radio station at songza that falls into the wheelhouse of this thread (with some excursions into whiteguyguitardadrock - Spoon, REM, Built to Spill). Mostly alt-country and its ancestors.

The Old 97s were great as usual last night. Since it was a free show, I wasn't expecting a full set -- but they played for an hour and a half! Opened with Barier Reef and plowed through old tunes (Victoria, W. Texas Teardrops, Big Brown Eyes, Four Leaf Clover, etc. Sprinkled in were some new tunes which sounded fantastic. New double album comes out in October -- can't wait! They closed with a blistering version of Timebomb (is there really any other way to describe Timebomb live?). I'll post some pics when I get home tonight.
The new Phosphorescent, Here's To Taking It Easy, is really good.
Been listening to a lot of Townes Van Zandt lately. Good times.

In all these mixes, I'm sort of surprised not to see Green on Red, The Long Ryders, or Meat Puppets. (This is not a criticism of the mixes, mind you, which are all uniformly excellent. It just makes me realize that this genre is much more expansive than I initially thought.)
