Anyone wanna come with me to see Earl Scruggs at Royce Hall on Saturday, November 5th? I'm definitely going, but I'll hold off on buying a ticket if someone else wants to come.

Just got done listening to radio special on the making of The Lost Notebooks of Hank Williams. Was good - you can see the breakdown of songs and interviews and stream it here on Public Radio Exchange or PRX.

I'm not familiar with that site but looks like there might be some interesting stuff out there for public radio types.

is that record any good? I'm a little hesitant to invest eartime on an album that includes Alan Jackson and Sheryl Crow

Dawes was really, really good last night. Sold out crowd, coming back to town for a 12/31 show (diff venue) and just added a 12/30 show yesterday.

This is one of our proudest days as a band. A star at First Ave MN. (Dawes via Twitter)

Its like the Infinite Monkey Theorem, if you put X amount of monkeys in a room with a typewriter and ask them to give you Shakespeare 99% of them will fling their shit at you while the other 1% will masturbate in the corner.

I've wanted to post these albums for a while (I'll put the links in the Group for leaked albums, for those intersted). The first is a compilation titled Drifter's Escape that came with an Uncut Magazine about the influences for Bob Dylan's John Wesley Harding and Nashville Skyline. Beyond the obvious influences (Hank Williams, Woody Guthrie) the compilation has some great picks, such as The Carter Family's "John Hardy," and the Delmoore Brothers' "I'm Lonesome Without You."

    Tracklist:

1 Hank Williams – I'll Never Get Out Of This World Alive
2 Johnny Cash - Train Of Love
3 Carter Family, The - John Hardy Was A Desperate Little Man
4 Jerry Lee Lewis – Deep Elem Blues
5 Elvis Presley – Blue Moon
6 Clarence 'Tom' Ashley* – The Coo Coo Bird
    7 Carl Perkins – Matchbox
8 Bill Monroe – Blue Moon Of Kentucky
9 Woody Guthrie – Pretty Boy Floyd
10 Delmore Brothers, The – I'm Lonesome Without You
11 Richard 'Rabbit' Brown* – James Alley Blues
12 Hank Thompson – The Wild Side OF Life
13 Louvin Brothers, The – When I Stop Dreaming
14 Lefty Frizzell – Lost Love Blues
15 Woody Guthrie – I Ain't Got No Home In This World Anymore

    Some songs from the comp:

And, the second album is Mickey Newbury's Heaven Help the Child. Newbury considering himself more of a Folk artist than a traditional Country artist, and was responsible for encouraging "Outlaw Country" musicians, such as Townes Van Zandt, and Kris Kristofferson in their own music. This is the last of his albums that has been known as his trilogy that began with It Looks Like Rain.

    Some songs:

    Live Version

I'll start a folder in the Group, and maybe some of you folks can contribute some links for some unappreciated/overlooked albums from time to time.

Thanks for the tip, Buddy, I'll check those out. I only started getting into Newbury after hearing him mentioned in a Waylon Jennings songs several years back; guy was really good.

And is anyone in here familiar with Walter Hiatt? I was in Austin in November and every country act I saw covered at least one of his songs. Even a kid like Warren Hood (google) was throwing down song after song from Walter Hiatt. Great songwriter; I'm shocked I made it so far without ever hearing of this guy.

This looks pretty cool, well, could sound pretty cool. Main singer (Jack Tempchin) ain't no Gram looking. May drive down from OC fer it just to hear a song like 'Sin City' live and hopefully done right.

Her new album is more pop than country, but I'm so excited to see Kathleen Edwards at the El Rey next month. Love her new album.

My old man is currently at ACL watching Loretta Lynn. Jealous. And through some twist he's become good friends with Lee Roy Parnell, apparently they go snorkeling in the Gulf together. Weird.

^Show was pretty great. Beautiful day by the beach.

    Highlights:
    * Fats Kaplin on the fiddle. Guy can really play
    * Gillian, Dave, and Emmylou doing a song together
    * Gillian & Dave's entire set. Really good. They even wore their rhinestone Nudie suits ("We brought out the bling for Warren"). "Miss Ohio" was fantastic
    * Boz Scaggs' chill, spooky set. Did a fantastic cover of "Boots of Spanish Leather." One of the best Dylan covers I've heard ever.
    * Old Crow threw down pretty hard. Laid down a really nice country cover of Whitney Houston's "I Wanna Dance With Somebody."

I'm not sure, they were her backing band and they were good. Follow that link at the bottom of my previous post and you can watch the entire show. I'm currently in the process of ripping the audio to my hard drive. Too good to not get a rip.
