The Odessa Tapes was the original incarnation of what became One Road More/More a Legend Than a Band. Recorded in Odessa in 1972 at Tommy Allsup's studio, the album-length demo was then kept by the then-bass player and forgotten about for 40 years. Pretty good stuff. Not long after this session, the same songs were re-recorded with a different band in Nashville (see: More a Legend Than a Band).

There is a chain of convenience stores in west Texas and New Mexico called Allsup's, I've always wondered if there was any tie to Tommy Allsup. There would have to be, wouldn't there?

Given the amount of time spent he playing in NM & TX, there's gotta be some kind of connection. Cousins or something.

My band is about to release a new album and since we arguably play country-ish music (we did win Best Country Band in St. Louis last year, somehow), I thought I'd post in this thread, too.

This song's called "Idaho" (click on the image):

I also posted this in the Board Members Who Make Music thread. This is the full album that features "Idaho", above.

We are actually playing an Uncle Tupelo tribute show this Saturday with a bunch of other bands in honor of the No Depression anniversary. We will be playin g New Madrid, I Got Drunk, Gun and Looking For A Way Out (songs that night will be from all albums).

We did a similar night 4 years ago and Jay left a bottle of whisky at teh bar for the bands to drink off of and Mike Heidorn was there in person.

Indeed, I got drunk the last time. I probably should not repeat that performance. Have you guys listened to the remastered No Depression? It sounds fantastic. While I always liked the songs on it, I never liked LISTENING to it, as the production was flat and gross. It is a million times better now.

It does sound great, and the demos Deusner talks about in that article I linked to are pretty awesome as well.

Tom you can still stream it at least though today.

such a claim would ignore the contributions made by other bands in this genre: The Mekons, X, Jason & the Scorchers, and Rank & File, among others, spent the ’80s mixing punk and country.
It's nice to see this acknowledged. So many people think Uncle Tupelo invented it. I'm looking at you, faxman.

On the country side of the equation, you also had guys like Dwight Yoakam playing the punk clubs all through the late 80s and exposing traditionalist country to punk audiences.

I must read the rest of this thread asthe last page alone is full of win. Sturgill Simpson's record is in my top 10 albums of 2014 and climbing higher with every listen. Robert Ellis also has a new record out which is also awesome, yet completely different.

If any of you have a chance to see First Aid Kit on their current tour, DO IT. Don't wonder, just do it. Last night's show was the best concert I've seen in about 18 months. Holy shit they sounded good.

Yes yes yes. I've been singing this guy's praises to anyone who'd listen for the last 7 months. So glad he's getting real traction off this new record.

yes but: I know it was just one night and just one show, but last night they were way beyond "so fucking good". I was by myself, I showed up about 10 mins before they took the stage, and I was just 'ok I like First Aid Kit, this should be good' and I left and I was 'holy fucking shit what did I just see'.
